Sidney Mahan

Mr. Sidney Eugene “Gene”  Mahan, 72, of Waleska, Georgia, departed this life Monday evening, February 19, 2018 at the WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta, GA.  

Gene was born in Canton, Georgia, November 26, 1945, a son of the late Noble Clyde and Mary Reathel Higdon Mahan. Along with his parents Gene was also preceded in death by a son, Casey Mahan, a daughter, Marla Mahan, and a brother, David Mahan.

Gene was retired from the General Motors Corporation in Doraville, Georgia, after working with them for over 35 years. He was a farmer, loved his old Ford Tractor and playing and rearranging the dirt around his house with it. He was a member of Goshen Baptist Church but had attended Salacoa (Greely) Baptist Church. He loved to tinker with his old cars and trucks, and to honor that he was carried to the cemetery in Ponders Funeral Home’s 1940 LaSalle hearse.

Gene is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Vikki Chadwick of Waleska, Kellie and Bryon Reeves of Calhoun; grandchildren, Bradley McDaniel, Cheyenne Chadwick, Seth Reeves, and Emily Reeves; great-grandchildren, Lillie Nevaeh McDaniel and Marlaina McDaniel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shelia and Dean Holt of Farner, Tennessee, Kathy Childers of Waleska, Brenda and Doug McDaniel of the Sonoraville community; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rex and Brenda Mahan of Ranger, Matt Mahan of Waleska, Larry and Minneoah Mahan of Ranger; the mother of his children, Linda Brooks of Waleska; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Gene Mahan was held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 2 p.m. from the Fairmount Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home with Reverend Wilburn Ridings officiating.

Gene was laid to rest at the Salacoa Baptist Church Cemetery. Josh Mahan, Bradley McDaniel, Seth Reeves, Scotty Childers, David “Squirrel” Mahan, and Randy Mulkey will all be honored to serve as pallbearers.

Thurmond Carver 

Thurmond Artrell Carver, 82, of Talking Rock, died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Pickens County on April 20, 1935, son of the late Lance Carver and Lois Patterson Carver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Betty Carver.

Thurmond was a life-long resident of the Ludville Community. He retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation after 28 years of work. He was a member of Ball Creek Baptist Church, and loved to garden.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Cornett Carver; brothers and sister-in-law, Howard and Judy Carver of Talking Rock, and James Carver of Calhoun; a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Emory Watson of Blue Ridge; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Eva Denny of Jasper, Randall and Diane Cornett of Hinton, J.C. and Eldie Cornett of Jasper, Ruthell Cornett of Jasper, and Mary Cornett of South Carolina; a brother-in-law, Reg Denny of Jasper; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 28th at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Brannon and Rev. Kenneth Kirk will officiate. Burial will follow at Ball Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Music will be arranged by the Angel Spirit Quartet. Pallbearers serving are David Carver, Cody Carver, Brian Henderson, Caleb Henderson, Charles Chastain, and Charlie Long.

Edward Teal

Edward Andrew Teal, 41, of Jasper passed away February 17, 2018. 

Drew is survived by his mother and father, Cynthia and Robert “Terry” Teal; brother and sister-in-law, Travis and Lauren Teal; sister and brother-in-law, Krista and Adam DeMartini; nieces, Addison DeMartini, Kaelyn DeMartini and Emerson Teal; nephews, Nathan DeMartini and Silas Teal; along with many loving extended family members.

Funeral services for Drew were held Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with Pastor Dr. Doug Anderson officiating. Entombment followed at Lawnwood Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Harper Jones

Infant Harper LeAnn Jones,  age 2 months, of Jasper passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Children's Healthcare Scottish Rite.  

Survivors include her parents, Tony and Lisa Jones; sisters, Ainsley Jones and Myla Jones; grandparents, Tammy Cox, Brian Sprague, Tony and Lisa Jones, Sr.  She was preceded in death by grandfather, Dwight Conn; twin sister, Isabelle Jones.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home Chapel with  Reverend Thomas Shipman and Brother Bill Jones, Jr. officiating. The interment followed in the Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.  


Jimey Fouts

Jimey Lary Fouts,  80, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home.  

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Laura Fouts; daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Ruel Barton; grandchildren, Jennifer Frady, Jamie Padgett,  Andrew Padgett, Eden Fouts, Alex Fouts, great-grandchildren, Buddy Cole Blankenship, Lyla Frady, and Evie Frady.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 28 at Roper Funeral Home Chapel. The interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Georgia National Cemetery.

Jewel Stanfield 

August 16, 1936 - February 22, 2018


Mrs. Jewel H. Stanfield,  81, of Talking Rock passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

Mrs. Stanfield is survived by her sons, Butch Stanfield of Jasper, Todd Thompson of Talking Rock and Frank Thompson of Talking Rock; daughter, Debbie S. Rooker of Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane & Gary Quinton of Jasper and Kay & Winston Stokes of Ellijay; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.

Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Stanfield.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 in the Cagle Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dean Price officiated.

Pallbearers: Chris Rooker, James Davis, Jodie Quinton, Cayle Quntion, Ryan Quinton, Shiloh Stanfield, J. J. Stokes and Josh Tuck.

Internment followed at Lake Forest Memorial Park.

Louise Neal

January 3, 1932 - February 22, 2018


Mrs. Louise Padgett Neal, 86, of Canton, formerly of Ball Ground passed away at her residence Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Mrs. Neal is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Albert & Shelia Neal of Dover, TN.; daughters, Patricia Neal of Canton and Katrina Hughes of Milledgeville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas & Bobbie Padgett of Ball Ground and Gene & Mary Padgett of Woodstock; brother, A. J. Padgett of Jasper; grandchildren, John & Therese Neal and Michael & Dedria Neal; give great-grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Neal SR. and daughter, Priscilla Neal.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 25 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Dawson County. Rev. Max Padgett officiated.

Pallbearers: Albert Neal, Michael Neal, Myron Padgett, Roy Padgett, Dawson Padgett and Michael Padgett.

Interment followed in Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
