Dismal turnout for school board election

    “Slow. Slow. Slow.”
That’s how Pickens’ Elections and Registration Supervisor Julianne Robertson described the runoff turnout for a school board seat, which pits incumbent Mike Cowart against Katherine White.

“It’s worse than I’d expected,” Roberts said before she crunched the numbers. Midday Tuesday, July 18th only 482 of the 19,800 voters had cast a ballot. That’s about two percent.
Early voting began July 5 and will run through July 22 at the elections office on Pioneer Road. Voters can cast their ballots between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Election day will be on Tuesday, July 26 at regular polling places from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
White finished first in the May primary with 44 percent of the votes (1,715). Cowart, who serves as the school board chair, received 39 percent of the votes (1,524). A third candidate took the remaining 17 percent.
Voters who cast ballots in the Republican or non-partisan races on May 24th and those who did not vote in the primary are eligible to vote in the runoff. Voters who cast ballots in the May 24th Democratic primary are not eligible to vote in this runoff.
