Submitted by Dr. Carlton Wilson, Pickens County Schools Superintendent

The Pickens County School District is reviewing school times for the 2017-2018 school year. We would like public input for this decision.

Current School Start and End Times:

High School:

8:10 a.m. - 3:25 p.m.

Middle School:

8:10 a.m. - 3:40 p.m.

Elementary:

7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Times Proposed for Public Discussion:

High School:

7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Middle School:

7:30 a.m. -2:45 p.m.

Elementary:

8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.

All schools would open at 7 a.m. under the proposed times. Parents could drop their children off as early as 7 a.m.

Reasons for Changes:

•High School - With a large extracurricular region, often times students must miss part of their fourth block class to travel to away competitions.

•High School - Students who work after school may be able to start and end work early.

•Middle School and High School - Older students would be home for younger students in the afternoons.

•Elementary School - Some of our youngest students are on the bus at 6:10 each morning.

•Elementary School - Currently when the time changes, a number of our younger students are waiting on buses at bus stops in the dark.

We will have surveys on the school district website at www.pickenscountyschools.org and on each school website. Please let us know what you think about the proposed school times. Be aware we would need to make this change with all the schools. We could not change one and not the other.

Thank you for your input.

Together we can create a great school system.
