Art & community Cornbread Reunion a hometown celebration of the arts

Cornbread Reunion

Local artists C. Larry Wilson, Amelia McIntyre and Ed Brackin have volunteered to be dunked at the Cornbread Reunion on August 12th.

In the world of summer vegetables - the corn, the tomatoes, the beans, okra and squash - cornbread serves as their great unifier. It’s the cornerstone of any August harvest dinner plate in the South, used for sopping, scooping, and crumbling.

The Pickens Arts & Cultural Alliance has enlisted cornbread as inspiration for the first Cornbread Reunion, an event they hope will become an annual affair and bring arts back to the Pickens County community.

“We lost Sharptop [Arts Association]. We lost the juried art show at the Marble Fest. We lost a lot, but the time came to bring the arts back,” said organizer Amelia McIntyre, who has been a driving force in the arts community for 40 years. “We want this event to be a way to reunite the arts with our community and would like to hold it every year.”

The Cornbread Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  at the green space on Main Street in downtown Jasper. It will feature artist demonstrations, raffles for $2,000 worth of art from regional artists, free rock painting for the popular rock hiding activity on “Pickens County Ga Rocks” Facebook page, music and, of course, cornbread.

“We’ll be cooking griddle cakes and have all the fixings,” said McIntyre.

McIntyre and two other local artists, C. Larry Wilson and Ed Brackin, have also volunteered to be dunked in the dunking booth for a dollar a throw, but anyone can be nominated to take the plunge – all to benefit the local arts community through PACA.

Other local artists to be featured at the event include: Billy Roper, Peter Loose, Stanley Ferguson, Heather Poole, Randy Tabias, Miz Thang, Kip Ramey, Arthur McIntyre, and Sam Granger.
