While the preliminary audit for the county is completed, Jones and CFO Champion have requested and received an extension from Georgia’s Department of Audits and Accounts, moving the audit deadline from its original date of June 30th. “What’s got us held up is a letter from an attorney from a lawsuit that was settled back in ’08,” said Jones, referring to an issue with the requested construction of a cellular phone tower in Tate. “The insurance company that was involved in that case failed to send a letter saying everything is cleared up and finished and that there isn’t anything hanging loose,” Jones said. “So everything else is done except for that case – which we won. Mechelle’s just waiting on that letter.” Jones said until the audit is “official,” according to state statutes, information about the county’s audit will not be available to the public. “When we get the letter and it’s official, we can turn it over to you,” he said.
