By the end of qualifying Friday, six people had thrown their hats into the ring for city council seats in Jasper and Nelson while three people will seek the position of mayor of Nelson in the November 3 general election. David Leister, James Queen and D. George Smith will vie for the position of Nelson mayor while Larry W. Sellers, Jr., incumbent Willie Leonard Pye and Jamey Tamplin will all vie for two council seats --- the top two vote-getters to serve. In Jasper, incumbent Greg Burgess will run against Anne Morrow to keep his city council seat. Allison Brown Ballew will run unopposed for the post vacated by Marcia Wigington Craft. “I’m all about Jasper and making it a better place to live and a better place for my child to grow up in and live,” Ballew said. “My focus will be on making Jasper as good a community as it can be for all its citizens.” Ballew, an Arbor Hills resident for five years, moved to Jasper from Clayton County. New to Jasper politics, Morrow has been a resident of Jasper for 20 years and currently works in Marietta. “I wanted to run because I would like to represent Jasper as I would like to be represented,” Morrow said. “I just think it’s important and it’s important to be there.” Elections officials said the Talking Rock election would be canceled since no one qualified to run against any of the incumbents. Peter Cagle, Jr. will continue to serve as mayor while his wife, Lynda Cagle, serves on the council. Angelia Payne and Randall Payne, father and daughter, also serve on the council along with Charles Opdenhoff and Espey Smith. The last day to register for the November 3rd general election is October 5. Citizens may register at the elections office Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm, except during lunch from 11:30 – 12:30. Citizens may also register at any public library or download a form through the secretary of state’s website and mail it to the local elections office. The website address is www.sos.georgia.gov
