Results from Tuesday's election show that • David Leister won the race for Nelson mayor. He defeated James Queen and D. George Smith without the need for a runoff. Leister took 76 of the 118 votes cast. • In the Nelson Council race, the two top vote getters Willie Pye (incumbent) and Larry Sellers, Jr. will win seats on the council. Pye received 69 votes; Sellers 57 votes. Sellers narrowly came out ahead of Jamey Tamplin who got 51 votes. There are 698 registered voters in Nelson. • In the Jasper Council race, Anne Morrow defeated Greg Burgess 63 votes to 35 votes. In Jasper only 98 people out of 1,914 registered voters bothered to cast a ballot for the single contested council race. Elections Supervisor Julianne Roberts said the less than 10 percent turnout in Jasper is the lowest she remembers seeing there. She said usually they will vote at least a couple of hundred even when there is only one seat up for grabs in Jasper. Morrow said she was disappointed that there hadn't been a better turnout, but grateful to the people who voted for her. She said she had made an effort to get out and talk to the people in Jasper and ask their concerns. "I will represent everyone in Jasper," she said. • In a second race in Jasper, Allison Ballew won a seat on the council without opposition. She will replace incumbent Marcia Craft who did not seek re-election. Elections records showed that only a combined 10.3 percent of the voters in Nelson and Jasper cast ballots Tuesday. |
