  • Legislation passed in 1991 by the state legislature -- PICKENS COUNTY -- BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS; CREATION; REFERENDUM. Voters in Pickens County voted overwhelmingly against the change.

  • The Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) is a nonprofit instrumentality of Georgia's county governments, according to their website. "Formed in 1914 with 19 charter county members, today ACCG serves as the consensus building, training, and legislative organization for all 159 county governments in the state."

  • Carl Vinson Institute of Government - "The Carl Vinson Institute of Government has been a public service and outreach unit of the University of Georgia (UGA) for more than seventy-five years," according to the New Georgia Encyclopedia. "The faculty and staff work to improve the quality of life for all Georgians through an extensive program of instruction, technical assistance, policy research, and communications."

    The Carl Vinson institute does ongoing research into Georgia's county government and publishes significant works such as the Handbook for Georgia County Commissioners, now in its fourth edition.
