Roger Pickett, husband, father and beloved grandfather, retiree from IBM and Delta Airlines, passed away at the age of 69 on October 21, 2018. Born in Houston, Texas in 1949, he was the only surviving child of Frances Issacs Pickett and Garland Derwood Pickett.
In 1957, Roger's mother moved the two of them to Phoenix, Arizona. Frances was an executive secretary and she settled in nicely with her young son in a toney area of Northeast Phoenix, in the Scottsdale School District.
In 1965, the last day of Roger's Sophomore year at Arcadia High School, he met Betty Milligan Pickett at a church youth party. Roger and Betty attended and graduated from Arizona State University. They were married at the First Methodist Church of Phoenix on December 19, 1969.
Roger graduated at the top of ASU's School of Business in December 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Transportation.
Shortly after he graduated from ASU, Roger was recruited to move to Atlanta, Georgia and work for J.C. Penney's at their catalog facility on South I-75. Less than a year later, Roger went to work for Delta Airlines and stayed with them for almost 20 years. During his time with Delta (1986), Roger and Betty became the parents of their precious sons, Nick, who was 3 years old and Chris, who was 3 months old. Parenthood was a real adjustment for Roger and Betty; but the new routine of caring for two very young children soon became completely normal.
During Roger's years with Delta, he, Betty and the boys traveled extensively. Some of the more exotic trips - like Singapore and Hong Kong and the two weeks spent in France to attend Vin Expo in Bordeaux - were better for just adults. But most of the trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean, England, and all over the USA were enjoyed as a family. Roger left Delta in 1997 to embark on a new career in consulting.
By the 2000s, the boys were growing up. The family moved to Pickens County in 2001. Nick helped Roger launch a generator dealership called Ready Power. It was during this time that Nick began volunteering as a fire fighter and eventually became a critical care paramedic. He married Casey Jacobs Pickett and they have a 6-year old daughter, Madison. Nick also has a 10-year old stepson, Jason. Chris finished his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Kennesaw State University. Chris married in 2007 and has twin nine-year old daughters, Adalynn and Aubrey. Today, Addie and Aubrey live with their mother in Warner Robins. Roger was always very fond of his granddaughters. After rearing two boys, getting to cuddle with granddaughters was a real pleasure for him.
Roger retired in March of this year after spending five years with IBM as one of their managing consultants. Roger was very interested in moving to Colorado Springs, so he took his best buddy, a Golden Retriever named Ripley, to Colorado Springs and rented a house while they looked around. After a few months, when he could not convince Betty to move to Colorado, Roger and Ripley came back home.
Roger lived a very successful life filled with family, travel and lots and lots of love and kisses. His family wishes they could have had more time with "Gampy", but they hope they now have an extra family guardian angel looking down on them.
His survivors include his wife, Betty Christine Pickett of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas Roger and Casey Pickett of Jasper; son, Christopher Donovan Pickett of Jasper; grandchildren, Adalynn Lola Pickett, Aubrey Christine Pickett, Madison Taylor Pickett, Jason Todd Lanning, Jr.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Fellowship Presbyterian Church with Reverend Ben Laughlin officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
