Schools issue statement on national student walkout

National School Walk-Out - March 14, 2018

In order to clarify the events that will be occurring tomorrow pertaining to the National School Walk-Out movement scheduled for 10:00 a.m., March 14, 2018, Superintendent Carlton Wilson would like to announce that the following activities will take place at Pickens High School, Jasper Middle School, and Pickens County Middle School.

PHS will have a short assembly to honor those who have fallen victim to school violence. During this assembly, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a presentation challenging students on ways to prevent school violence and bullying.

Jasper Middle School and Pickens County Middle School will also be observing a moment of silence at 10:00 a.m. for 1 minute and 17 seconds. This moment of silence will take place in the classrooms. Students will not be permitted to walk outside the building due to safety concerns.

These activities will be in honor of all students and staff who have been victims of school violence and to create an awareness among students of their responsibilities. We are requesting students join the movement, Don’t Walk Out, Walk Up. Walk up to students who are sitting by themselves, students that are being picked on or made fun of, and students who are going through difficult times in their lives. Take an interest in other students and help to make all your fellow classmates feel welcome. It is through relationships school violence and bullying can be averted.
