Chef Hans Rueffert fired up his test kitchen preparing “Garden Gumbo” using fresh corn, okra, tomatoes and more from the Pickens Farmer’s Market last Saturday at the Woodbridge Inn. He is the chair of the food committee for the Cornbread Reunion and said, “nothing goes better with cornbread than fresh vegetables.”
The free admission 2nd annual Cornbread Reunion running from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday August 11, is a “Hometown Celebration of the Arts” and is sponsored by the Pickens Arts & Cultural Alliance. The gastronomic and arts gathering will be held at the green space at the corner of Spring and South Main. It will feature local artists, including an art raffle, live music and a cornbread competition.
Lunch will be $10 and include choice of cornbread, coleslaw, syrups and fried ham prepared on the grill by Arthur McIntyre. Also, griddle cakes, preserves and butters will add to the country meal.
The downtown Jasper Sidewalk Sale will take place from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and provide an opportunity for residents to shop local bargains. Music and activities will be taking place on North Main for the entire family.
