Prepare your recipes for annual cornbread contest

Vendors still wanted for celebration

Join Pickens Arts & Cultural Alliance on Saturday, Oct. 12 in downtown Jasper for a downhome celebration of the arts and that ultimate southern staple – cornbread.

The public is invited to attend PACA’s 3rd annual Cornbread Reunion, which will feature a cornbread competition, an art raffle, live music, food, children’s activities, open mic and much more.

The event is held on D.B. Carroll Street behind the Old Jail from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

For just $5, festival-goers can dig in to a classic southern dish - cornbread with a side of soup beans, which will include pinto or white beans with traditional ham or fatback. A variety of condiments will be on hand to gussy up your meal. Homemade cobbler is dessert, and is included in the $5 charge. Dinner will be served from 11:30 – 2 p.m.

Anyone can enter the cornbread contest, but after some complaints about what constitutes “real cornbread” last year, PACA has created with has created two categories – Traditional Southern Cornbread and Creative Cornbread. There is also a minimum size this year of an 8” diameter or an 8” x 8” pan. Entries will be judged based on taste, texture, and presentation. Judging will begin at 11:30 a.m. Entries must be received no later than 11:15 a.m.
