The official GDOT detour is nearly 60 miles - local motorists will want to find alternate routes.
Highway 53 East near the Tate House will close at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 for repairs to a railroad crossing, with work expected to be completed by Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Per Georgia Department of Transportation policy, GDOT will provide an official detour along state routes, which will be able to accommodate larger tractor trailers – but the state detour is 59 miles. Local traffic will want to find alternative detours on other roads.
The GDOT detour will take motorists west on SR 53 to SR 515. From SR 515 traffic will head south on SR 372 and then east on SR 369. The detour will continue north on SR 400 back to SR 53.
According to GDOT, “crews are repairing the [railroad] crossing to make it smoother for vehicles traveling over it. The repairs are expected to be completed by Monday afternoon, weather permitting.”
