The county’s entire recycling and trash operation at the Camp Road location will relocate to property off Appalachian Court, which was recently home to Self Recycling.
Commissioners, who approved purchase of the 18 acres and a 28,000 square foot building at their Thursday, Nov. 21 meeting, met on site the next day to give a tour of the facility. Commissioners believe moving the recycling facility to the more secluded location off Highway 515 north of Walmart is a huge improvement from Camp Road, which is cramped and has a difficult time accommodating traffic,
especially on busy Saturdays.
“This is going to serve Pickens for a long time,” said Commissioner Jerry Barnes.
The board approved $1.3 million for the purchase.
Commissioner Becky Denney said the Camp Road operation has been an eye sore at the busy roadway, and is excited about the change for both operational and aesthetic reasons.
The county’s new recycling facility, which the board hopes will be up and running 90 days after the purchase is finalized in January, will relocate trash dumping services as well as recycling services to the large, open-air roofed structure. With scales already on site, it will also be able to accommodate weighing and hauling of household trash, and commissioners will purchase a machine that grinds mattresses, box springs, and sofas.
The county did have operational scales at their Jones Mountain Road facility, but that has been closed for some time. Jones said by having the scales already in place at the Appalachian Court location they are saving several hundred thousand dollars not having to purchase them outright.
Vehicles will be able to drive into the structure to dump trash at what Commission Chair Rob Jones called “tip scales” off to the right, which are able to be hydraulically dumped when the garbage capacity reaches a certain weight.
There are two bays for tractor trailers to back up where tires can be recycled, and an enclosed portion of the building for employees that is much larger than the current building on Camp Road.
Jones said the county has had the purchase on their radar since this summer, but the price was about $1 million more than the $1.3 million price they will pay. He said they were able to secure the lower price by agreeing to buy all four tracts of land, totaling 18 acres, and the building. He said the county could use the land for a variety of things, including having a burn tower for fire department training. Commissioner Denney noted it is better for the county to have more land in their inventory.
The property and building will be paid for with a commercial land lease from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia.
While there aren’t solid plans for the Camp Road recycling area at this point, Jones said some of the structures will be torn down and some areas possibly grassed over. At their meeting, the county also voted to allow Jones to sign a contract for construction of the public works building, which will be at that county property on Camp Road near the old marble convict camp that currently houses public works. The department will relocate into the new building.
