Two hundred and sixty-six Pickens High School seniors will walk at Friday evening’s commencement ceremony, marking the end of their high school careers and the beginning of a new chapter. In total, there are 272 PHS graduates this year.

Ceremonies will be held at Dragon Stadium at 7 p.m. with a processional to “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Graduation ceremonies were moved indoors in 2021 due to issues with high heat on Saturday mornings. At the 2019 Saturday morning graduation, six people were treated for issues related to heat exposure, which the EMA director said was not uncommon.

With thousands expected to attend the event, the school system has provided shuttle locations and encourages families to make a game plan. No one will be allowed to park along Dragon Drive due to safety concerns.

“Graduating at night creates a few logistical and safety issues that must be addressed…We have worked closely with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office to devise an effective and efficient plan to ensure the safety of our guests is our top priority,” school leaders state in a graduation information sheet.

Grads will get tickets for three cars to park at the school. Additional cars must park at a shuttle area at Pickens Junior High, Chattahoochee Tech, and Royston. Campus opens at 4:30 p.m. with grads to report at 4:30 p.m.

Pickens Junior High – Shuttles will load on the side of the school and will depart between 5:15 – 6 p.m. This location is handicap accessible.

Chattahoochee Technical College – Bus shuttles will load at the front entry of the school (parking lot at Burnt Mountain Road and Pioneer Road) and will depart between 5:15 and 6 p.m. This location is handicap accessible.

Royston, LLC – Shuttles will load at the main parking lot. A tent will be set up at the loading area. Shuttles will depart between 5:15 – 6 p.m.

See the Graduation section on pages 1-8 C, where you’ll find the grad’s senior photos and the graduation program.

If the event is forced indoors due to weather, grads will receive four guest tickets. Ceremonies will be held in the PHS Gymnasium. Campus will open at 4:30 p.m. with grads to report at 4:30 p.m.
