Community encouraged to attend Patriot Day remembrance on September 11

County fire Chief to serve as guest speaker

By Frank Leist, Treasurer & Project Manager Phase II Veterans Memorial Park

Now that Labor Day is over, we must focus on a day we should never forget: September 11, 2024, Patriot Day. It is a day when we, as a community, come together to honor the memory of those who were tragically killed in the September 11 attacks.

Patriot Day is a United States national observance that honors the memory of those who were killed in the September 11 attacks. It was first observed in 2002, after the proclamation by President George W. Bush.

On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda launched a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on the United States, killing almost 3,000 people. In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events, the President proclaimed September 14, 2001, as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. A year later, September 11 was made a National Day of Mourning, referred to as Patriot Day. This observance has been proclaimed annually since 2002.

It is not a public holiday; therefore, government offices, educational institutions, and businesses do not close today. On Patriot Day, the national flag is flown at half-mast on all United States government buildings and establishments. Individuals are also encouraged to display flags in their homes.

We warmly invite everyone to attend the Patriot Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday, September 11.

The event, which will commence at 1 p.m., is a solemn occasion where we come together to honor the memory of the September 11 attacks victims.

Our guest speaker, Tim Prather, Pickens County fire chief, will share his insights and reflections.
