Connected & Protected — Youth leaders aid seniors with cells, digital safety

21st Century Leaders member Owen Mumaw has launched a new community initiative called Connected & Protected, a hands-on program designed to help seniors build confidence with technology and stay safe in an increasingly digital world.
After doing a survey this summer with seniors, he found that while they all had cell phones, they were not confident about using them and were afraid that they would be taken advantage of by scammers.
Connected & Protected teaches essential smartphone skills, how to spot and avoid scams, and ways to stay informed and connected during storms or emergencies. The program will be offered through easy-to-understand safety clinics, newspaper articles, and printed handouts.
A key feature of the initiative is its intergenerational approach. Mumaw and other tech-savvy teens will provide one-on-one help at senior centers, civic groups, and church gatherings, giving older adults patient, practical support with their devices.
For seniors who lack access to reliable technology, the program also aims to create an emergency phone bank, ensuring that the community’s most under-resourced residents have a way to call for help and receive critical alerts.
Connected & Protected brings together safety, communication, and community — empowering seniors to stay connected, stay informed, and stay protected.
