The PHS boys’ tennis team has been on a roll lately. Since late February, they have secured three consecutive 5-0 sweeps, with two of those victories coming against region opponents. They followed up with a solid 4-1 win over Chestatee at home, with only a 4-1 road loss to Lumpkin blemishing their impressive stretch.
The Dragons currently sit at 5-5 overall but hold a strong 3-1 record in region play with three key matches remaining. Their goal is to finish in the top four to secure a state playoff berth, and after spring break, they’ll have the opportunity to solidify their standing—or climb even higher in the rankings.
Leading the singles lineup is junior Joseph Saltino at No. 1, followed by sophomore Scott Tucker at No. 2 and junior Will Leathers at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles team has primarily featured sophomore Braydon Clemons and freshman Brooks Berryman, while the No. 2 doubles team has been anchored by junior Jack Tatum and sophomore Brady Gaddis.
This year’s squad boasts strong depth, with Eli Breen, Evan Gibson, Jackson Hosmer, Joshua Lanford, Carson Lind, and Devin Shoemake rounding out the roster. One of the most notable aspects of this team is its unwavering support for one another, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and camaraderie that is a pleasure to witness.
The boys are coming off a state playoff appearance last season, where they narrowly missed advancing to the Sweet 16 in a hard-fought match against Coahulla Creek.
Next week, we’ll take a look at the girls’ team.
