Farmer’s market season is just around the corner with several markets within less than an hour drive. We love all farmers’ markets as they all have unique characteristics. However, buyer beware, most of the markets do not require the farmer to grow their own produce.
Many vendors resell produce that they buy at the state market or other places. The rub is when a market allows resale, produce might be priced less than a legitimate organic farmer’s produce at the next booth. If in doubt, ask the vendors: did you grow this? Where did you grow it and how? Most folks will be upfront with you so that you can make an informed decision.
No, it is not tomato season, no matter how much we want it to be true. If you want to eat local and seasonal then we have to wait. There is an exception to this rule. Several farmers I know use high tunnels to get a jump on the season. Steve and Becky Alexander (Smoky Mountain Produce) and Jeff and Catherine Morris (Old Dial Road Farm) not only have field grown vegetables but use high tunnels to extend the season.
The Jasper Farmer’s Market is the only market I know of that requires all farmers to grow their own produce. You can be guaranteed that anything you buy at the JFM is 100% locally grown and made.
The Jasper Farmers market is one of the first markets opening this year on April 5th. This year should open with a bang as several farmers will have a great selection of produce. Old Dial Road Farm will be at the market for the month of April will great produce.
Smoky Mountain Produce will also be selling a great selection of vegetables including hydroponic lettuce and microgreens.
The Jasper Farmers Market is open Saturdays 7:30 a.m. until noon in the park and ride lot across from the old school at 502 Veterans Memorial Blvd. It is open rain or shine.
