Food Pantry preps for Turkey Day

Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 14 volunteers at the CARES Food Pantry were in full swing packing up Thanksgiving boxes that will be distributed to CARES clients before the holiday.

CARES Director Andy Craddock estimates they will give out around 200 Thanksgiving meals during distribution days, which will be this Wednesday and Friday, as well as the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Each box will include as many Thanksgiving-appropriate items as the food pantry could secure, including a frozen turkey or ham, canned or fresh vegetables, breads and sweets.

Any client of the CARES Food Pantry can pick up a Thanksgiving dinner box during their regular hours those days, from 9 a.m. to noon. CARES will be closed the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Craddock said they have seen a spike in numbers of people who are signing up for their services, which he attributes in part to rising housing costs.

“I’d say we have around 200 to 225 people coming a week now,” he said, adding that numbers from last month totaled around 680.

On Wednesday, November 22nd any member of the public is invited to visit the free mobile food pantry. The mobile pantry will be there from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will include produce, canned goods, dry goods, and the opportunity to sign up for CARES.
