Genealogy 101 topic of upcoming historical society talk

Submitted by Pickens Historical Society

Gerald Parker, a Pickens native and longtime Cherokee County educator, will offer tips on tracing your family tree, along with anecdotes of the Parker family, as the next speaker in the Pickens Historical Society’s series on April 30th at 7 p.m. at Pendley Creek Brewing on Jasper’s Main Street.

Parker will discuss how he took a recent interest in family history from research to a published book.

Parker said his interest in genealogy stems from two sources. First, his mother, who has penned the “Ruth’s Remembrances” column each week in the Progress and “to a great extent that was responsible for my interest in genealogy and history.”

Second, Parker says his great-grandfather vanished in 1911 and was never found. Parker said he began by digging into this.

The Pickens Historical Society offers a speaker series roughly every other month at Pendley Creek Brewing on Jasper’s Main Street.  Find out more at Pickens Historical Society on Facebook.
