Pickens County residents have multiple opportunities this spring to help clean up and beautify their community as Keep Pickens Beautiful participates in the national Greatest American Cleanup, part of a nationwide effort organized by Keep America Beautiful ahead of America’s 250th birthday.
Local cleanup and beautification activities will take place throughout March and April.
March will focus on roadside litter pickups and a “Hard-to-Recycle” event at the Pickens Recycling Center on Appalachian Court. April activities will focus on beautification projects, culminating in the annual Earth Day on Main cele-bration.
For the clean-up effort, the 2026 Litter-O-Lympics kicked off March 7 and runs through April 18. Instead of a single-day event, volunteers—known as “Trash-letes”—can participate at their own pace by collecting roadside litter and report-ing their efforts through the KPB Litter Hero app. Weekly gift card drawings will be held for participants, and the top three Litter Heroes will be recognized dur-ing Earth Day on Main on April 25.
A kick-off Litter-O-Lympics group event hosted volunteers as they collected 395 pounds of litter and 9 large items (tires, pallets, etc.) on the stretch of Main Street from Revolution Church to Old Philadelphia Road.
More group events are scheduled throughout the month of March.
The next community event will be a CRT TV and Hard-to-Recycle Items Recycling Day on March 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pickens Recycling Center. Thanks to a BRACE grant from the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation, most items can be recycled free of charge. Accepted items include CRT TVs and monitors, Styrofoam, fluorescent tube lights (up to five free), corrugated plastic signs, and shrink wrap. Materials will be accepted only while space remains.
The 4th Annual Earth Day on Main will take place Saturday, April 25, featuring free family activities and educational exhibits on seed starting, gardening, recy-cling, and composting.
Residents are encouraged to participate in cleanup events, volunteer with Keep Pickens Beautiful, or simply take inspiration to make small changes that im-prove the community.
