Let’s Ride — Jasper unveils new mountain bike park

After a few years of behind-the-scenes planning, Doris Wigington Park has a fresh look, new mountain bike trails, and skills development tracks for the public to enjoy. The city held a grand opening celebration for the park Saturday, June 1.

“[It] went really well,” said Jasper Assistant City Manager Kim Goldener. “We were all very pleased with the turn-out. There were lots of smiling faces riding through the park and on the skills equipment/pump track, and that was the main goal.”

New features include beginner and low-intermediate bike trails, and a new skills development area including a pump track, snake track, rollers, a curved wall, and a dirt berm. The skills area is for riders of all levels.

The trails are all named after birds, taking the lead from the Atlantic Coast Conservancy’s construction of Chimney Swift Towers in the southern portion of the park, Goldener said.

There approximately 1.5 miles of new multi-use mountain bike, hiking, and walking trails, and another three miles of original gravel trails for walking.

Keep Pickens Beautiful members were in attendance Saturday and added herbs around the gazebo they donated to the park a few years ago.

Blue Mountain Bikes in Blue Ridge donated an Altis helmet and Fox goggles, and Cartecay Bike Shop in Ellijay donated a Norco Torrent mountain bike. Kim Martin was the winner of the mountain bike giveway.

Jasper officials began eyeing the park for improvements after it went more or less unused by the public for many years, with public complaints about walkability of the trails and safety.

Doris Wigington Park is open from sunrise to sunset.  The park’s three entrances are at 540 Lumber Company Road; 1671 Hood Road; and 999 Gennett Drive.
