New girls basketball coach named

Successful coach brings state playoff experience to Dragonettes

   Brandon Thomas will be replacing retiring head coach Donna Enis as the ’Nettes coach next year.


The Pickens County School District announces the hire of Brandon Thomas as the new leader of the girls basketball program. Coach Thomas returns to Pickens County, where he was a teacher and a coach from 2005—2010.

This past season, Coach Thomas completed his 17th year in coaching, the last seven as head coach for the highly successful girls varsity squad at Winder-Barrow High School. During the 2015—2016 season, the Lady Doggs ended with an overall record of 26-7, earning 2nd place in the 5A State Tournament. His coaching achievements include:

2017 Region Coach of the Year

2017 First region title for Winder-Barrow since 1962

2016 AAAAAA Coach of the Year

2016 Athens-Banner Herald Coach of the Year

State finals appearance in 2016, Elite 8 in 2017

Best career winning percentage for all girls basketball coaches at Winder-Barrow

Coach Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Georgia State University and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Georgia College and State University.

      Continucd on 2B Thomas, his wife Tracey, and their four daughters back to Pickens County,” stated Chris Parker, District Athletic Director. “Coach Thomas has a proven record of success – he believes in teaching fundamental basketball and sets expectations to help players become successful on and off the court.”

“I value the way a small community joins together to support youth sports – success comes from booster clubs, fans, coaches, volunteers, and community partners all working together,” stated Coach Thomas. “I look forward to wearing my green shirts again and re-joining the PHS family. Go Dragonettes!”
