Tracy Allison

June 11, 1969 – August 24, 2021

            It is with deep sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of William “Tracy” Allison of Nelson.  Tracy passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the age of 51.

            Tracy will be greatly missed by his Mother, Patricia Duff Gillispie; Sister, Teresa Allison (Patrick); Brother, Stephen Allison (Julie) and Sister Ruthann Slay; Nieces, Tammy Allison, Tabetha Landrum, Tasha Garrett and Cheyenne Slay; Nephews, Destin Fulcher, Kyle Allison, and Isaiah Hashman; Special Aunt & Uncle Patty and Ron Brown; Cousins, Tammy O’Rourke, Star Burke, and Tessa O’Rourke along with several other family members and friends.

            Tracy was preceded in death by Step-Father James “Herbie” Gillispie, Uncle Jerry Gillispie, Uncle Grady Pate, Cousin Richard “PeeWee” Turner, and Nephew Joshua Allison.

            Though he gave us hell, he made it count and left a lasting impression on us all. We will love and miss him every second. At his request, Tracy will be cremated and no service will be held. The family plans on celebrating his life at a later time.

Brenda O’Shields

            Brenda Ann Kirby O’Shields, 62, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

            She is survived by her husband, Joe O’Shields of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Crystal O’Shields of Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Tara O’Shields and Chris Buchanan of Jasper; grandchildren, Dylan Head, Summer Head, Abigail O’Shields, Connor Tippins, and Landon O’Shields; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and William Serritt of Calhoun, Sue and Dwight Poteet of Chatsworth.   Several other family members also survive.

            Brenda was preceded in death by her father and mother, Wayne and Essie Kirby; sisters, Betty Prather and Virgina “Gin” Merrell.       

            Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Cantrell officiating. Following the funeral, Mrs. OShields was cremated.  

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Margaret Stone

            Margaret Stone, 76, of Jasper, Georgia passed away, Saturday August 28, 2021. Funeral service was Tuesday, August 31, 2021. In Their Honor Funeral Home of Jasper 706-253-5060.

Gregory Medlin

            Gregory Hayes Medlin, 64, of Ranger, GA – moved on to the next great adventure August 22, 2021.  

            Born on November 27, 1956, in Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of Loye Hayes Medlin and Elise Bryant Medlin. He lived life on his own terms. At various times he was a lawyer, a businessman, a farmer, a trucker, a pilot, a piano player, a sailor, a Vegas blackjack player, an author, a jeweler, and a scientist.  AKA Buford Perry, he went on motorcycle trips all over the United States and spent years in faraway places such as Italy, Turkey, Russia, and the Far East. 

            He is survived by two children, Adam Gregory Medlin (Jennifer) and Kevin Eugene Medlin (Anita); two grandchildren, Soleil Elise Medlin and Mia Grace Medlin, two dogs, two granddogs and many family, friends, and admirers across the globe.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Judith Dean

            Judith Eva Dean, 62, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Friday, August 27, 2021 at her home.

            She is survived by her husband, Randy Dean of Jasper; son, David Dean of Marietta; sisters, Jan Jarrell of Bradenton Florida, Jenifer Granda of Bradenton and Jolynn Vanderheiden of Rockhill South Carolina.

            Funeral services were held on Monday, August 30, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the Roper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Frank Lathery officiating.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

James Jewell

U.S. Veteran

            James Edward Jewell, 73, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at his home.      Ed was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He joined the military where he served in the Army from 1964-1967. After moving to Georgia in 1970, he then made Jasper his home in 1988.

            He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Heather Jewell of Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Shaun Parker of Jasper; grandchildren, Braden and Bree Jewell, Bailey, Cameron, Kai, and Kasen Parker, who lovingly called him Peepa; niece, Rhonda Harris Capps of Greer, South Carolina. Other friends and relatives also survive.

            Ed was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Jewell Martin; father and mother, James and Carrie Dryman Jewell. 

            A graveside service was held at 2 p.m on Friday, August 27 2021 at Graceland Cemetery, 4814 White Horse Road; Greenville, SC 29611 with Pastor Furman Gatewood officiating.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory.

Ronald Blackwell

            Ronald Terrell Blackwell,  67, of Ball Ground, Georgia passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at his home.

            He is survived by his life long companion, Shirley Ruff of Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlana Blackwell and Dan Allen of Ball Ground, Sandy and Brad Blackwell of Yellow Creek; daughters, Candy Reynolds of Ball Ground, Whitney Wigington of Cartersville, son and daughter-in-law, Josh Blackwell and Missy Beatrice of Lilburn; step children, Miranda and Tracy Lester, Jeremy Chastain and Jacob Long; sister and brother-in- law, Deborah and Eddie Jones of Marble Hill; sisters, Trudy Totherow of Marble Hill, Tammy Blackwell of Ellijay, Dawn Blackwell of Ellijay; brother, Kevin Blackwell; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

            Ronald was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harold and Edith Blackwell; sisters, Doris Kent, Frances Smith; brothers J.H. Blackwell, Wayne Blackwell and Wesley Blackwell.

            Funeral services were  held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Reverend William Blackwell and Reverend Gene Hyde officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

            Cynthia Ann Burnette, 60, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Thursday, August 27, 2021. No services are planned at this time.

Nancy Daley

            Nancy Carter Daley, 79, of Canton (formerly of Acworth, Riverdale, and College Park, Georgia) passed away Friday, August 20, 2021. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Crossroads of Life Baptist Church in Canton, Georgia.

            A special thank you to Misty with Affinity Hospice. They went above and beyond.

Mary Barrett

March 29, 1928 – August 23, 2021

            Mrs. Mary Barrett, 93, of Jasper, passed away Monday, August 23, 2021 at Assured Hospice in Cartersville.

            Mary is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

            She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Barrett; parents, John & Lizzie Keener Patterson; brothers, Wilburn, Austin, Willard, and Charlie Patterson; sisters, Lorene Courey, Etta Newton, Pauline Weems, Irene Barrett, and twin sister Martha Patterson, who died at birth.

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Cagle Funeral  Home Chapel, with Rev. Ben Mock officiating.

            Interment will be at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Ranger, following the funeral service.

            Pallbearers: Eugene Allaway, James Nix, Grady Cagle, Barry Bowman, Freddy Weems, and David Weems.

            In lieu of flowers, donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Fred Phaby

January 15, 1944 – August 27, 2021

U.S. Veteran 

            SSGT Fred L. Phaby USMC Ret. died at home on August 27, 2021. Born in Moultrie, GA on January 15, 1944, he grew up in California, joined the military at age 17, and retired from the US Marine Corps after 20 years of service, which included two tours in Vietnam. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, building and collecting model airplanes, and playing with his dogs. Fred loved the Lord and was a founding member of Creekside Messianic Fellowship.

            Fred is survived by his wife of 30 years, Linda Phaby; three sons, James (Jayne) Phaby of Camano Island, WA, Neil (Michelle) Phaby, and Leon Phaby, both of Garden Valley, CA; six grandchildren; one brother, Michael (Sherry) Eales of Amarillo, TX; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.

            A memorial service will be held September 9, 2021 at 2 p.m., at Creekside Messianic Fellowship, 1191 E. Church Street, Jasper, GA.

Helen Gorman

January 10, 1923 – August 28, 2021

            Helen Gorman, 98, of Clarksville, GA, formerly of Paterson, NJ passed away on Saturday August 28, 2021 at her residence.

            Helen was born in Bronx, New York in 1923. She was a resident of Paterson, New Jersey for over 30 years before moving to Georgia where she spent the rest of her life. She worked for a number of years before choosing to be home with her children.

            Helen enjoyed crocheting and has crocheted hundreds of blankets for her family and friends. She also enjoyed being outside and spending time in her garden as well as cooking in her kitchen. She will be remembered for her fighting spirit, her devotion to family, her witty sense of humor and her impressive stash of Root Beer and Twizzlers. She will be incredibly missed by all who knew her.

            She is survived by her four children, Charlotte Travis, Geraldine Rahm, Charles Grieder Sr, and Robin Smith. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

            She is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Gorman; her daughter, Helene Aughey; one great-grandchild, and her parents, Anthony & Mary Barbara Sztathaus.

            Visitation is Thursday, September 2, noon until the funeral hour.

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Cagle Funeral Home Chapel.

            Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Gardens following the funeral service.

            Pallbearers: Jonathan Smith, Wesley Smith, Charles Grieder Jr, Benjamin Smith, Jack Hansen, and Adam Kennedy.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s.

Michael Pugh

            Michael Ernest Pugh, 67, of Dawsonville, Georgia, a United States Army Veteran passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021. A military service is being planned. In Their Honor Funeral Home of Jasper. 706-253-5060

Jackie McGee

            Jacquelin “Jackie” Floyd McGee, 82, of Pelzer, SC, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at NHC Healthcare of Anderson, SC.

            Born August 23, 1938 in Elberton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Lindsey Floyd. She was married to the late Dr. Wayne L. McGee, Jr.

            Jackie, was a graduate of the University of Georgia and enjoyed a 10-year teaching career before operating her husband’s veterinary clinic for 20 years. Jackie loved to read and especially enjoyed time with her family. She was a member of Starr Baptist Church.

            She is survived by her sons, Wayne L. III and Dinah McGee of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Jeffery Floyd McGee; granddaughter, Catherine Lindsey Roberts; son-in-law, David Roberts, all of Pelzer, SC; sister-in-law, Betty Floyd of Athens, GA.

            In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Fran McGee Roberts; sisters, Ruth Floyd and Ann Stanfield; brothers, Terry Floyd, Roy Floyd, and Jim Floyd.

            A graveside service was held Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Starr Baptist Church Cemetery, Starr, SC with Rev.Tony Howell officiating.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the hospice of one’s choice or the Anderson County Humane Society, 407 Pearman Dairy Rd, Anderson, SC 29625.

            Arrangements entrusted to the staff of McDougald Funeral and Cremation Services in Anderson, SC.

Debra Byers

            Debra Walker Byers, 67, of Talking Rock, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. She was born October 24, 1953 to Luther and Claudine Walker in Ellijay, Georgia. 

            Debra is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Marshall Mullins of Talking Rock; grandson and his fiance, Hunter Bryson and Katie Eubanks of Talking Rock; sister, Linda Brannon of Talking Rock, sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Glenn Stone of Talking Rock; brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Jo Lynn Walker of Jasper.  Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 1, 2021 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Grant Wade officiating. Interment will follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper.

            The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Amanda Ryder

            Amanda Lane Ryder, 41, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper. She was born June 24, 1980 to Johnny and Bronzile Matthews in Pickens County.

            Amanda is survived by her husband, Douglas Ryder of Jasper; children, Kayla Ryder of Jasper, Thomas Ryder of Jasper, Jacob Ryder; parents, Johnny and Bronzile Matthews of Jasper; brothers, Jason Matthews of Jasper, Jimmy Matthews of Jasper, and Jennifer Matthews of Jasper.

            A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2021 at the Family Cemetery on Bryant Road.  

            The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Terry Ray

July 24, 1958 – August 29, 2021

            Mr. Terry Lewis Ray, 64, of Holly Springs, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Seasons Hospice IPU in Cumming, GA.

            Mr. Ray is survived by his father and step-mother, John and Tonia Ray of Jasper; brothers and sister-in-law, Gary and Suzanne Ray of Jasper, and Barry Lamar Ray of Holly Springs; step-sister, Hannah Clark of Jasper; several nieces and nephews.

            He is preceded in death by his brother, Mark Ray.

            No services are scheduled at this time.          Cagle Funeral Home is honored to serve the Ray family.
