Jody Pettigrew

Mr. Jody Pettigrew, 42, of the Hinton Community, passed away Wednesday February 15, 2017 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. 

Mr. Pettigrew is survived by his mother and stepfather, Denzel & Barry Bowman of the Hinton Community; son, Jordan Pettigrew and fiance Allison Wilkes of Chatsworth; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shannon & Donald Teague of Hill City, Melanie & Greg Evans of Hinton Community, Andrea & Bill Coleman of the Hinton Community, Kerri & Hank Coleman of the Hinton Community, Tanya Bowman of Rockmart, and Stacy Bowman of Whitestone. 

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 from the chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Joseph Hightower officiating. Interment at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Greg Evans, Bill Coleman, Hank Coleman, Jason Childers, Hank Wilson, Jonathon Long, Jason Long, and Tinker Moore.

The family accepted flowers or donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Jerry Shoemaker

January 9, 1942 – February 16, 2017

 

Jerry Kristopher Shoemaker, 75, of Big Canoe, Georgia, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 16, 2017.

Born to Gerald and Thelma Shoemaker on January 9, 1942 in Haslett, Michigan, Jerry lived most of his life in Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Liz; his daughters, Kelly Shoemaker, Tracy Joseph and Marcy Shoemaker; stepchildren, Jennifer Nye, Nancy Ouimette, and Mike Maillet; his brother, Larry Shoemaker; sisters, Jane Weiderman and Jill Hagan, and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. Papa Shoe was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all.

As a young man, Jerry had a passion for flying and joined the Air Force after graduating from Michigan State University. He proudly flew the F-4 as a member of the 390th Fighter Squadron, deployed out of Da Nang AB in South Vietnam. After an honorable discharge from the armed services, Jerry spent 32 years as a pilot for Delta Airlines. He enjoyed watching his beloved Michigan State Spartans in any and all sports, and he was an avid tennis player, golfer, fisherman, and nature enthusiast. He was also a dedicated volunteer at Good Samaritan, where he helped to provide free medical, dental, and mental health services to the underserved of Pickens County. Jerry was always there to help friends and family, and his sense of humor was appreciated by all. He will be missed dearly.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Chapel, 226 Wolfscratch Circle in Big Canoe, Georgia where Jerry was a long time member.

Rev. Wallace Sutton

August 10, 1932 – February 16, 2017

 

Reverend Wallace Frank Sutton, 84, of Ball Ground, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017.  He was born August 10, 1932 to Thurston and Ellen Wheeler Sutton in Cherokee County and was married to the late Bobbie Jarrett Sutton. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and an Ordained Baptist Preacher.

Wallace is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Mark Henson of Ball Ground, Sandra and Ralph Bryant of Talking Rock, Deanna and Lanier Warbington of Cumming; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Betty Sutton of Canton; sister, Christine Ingram of Talking Rock; grandchildren, Tracy Arlana Bryant of San Marcos, Texas, April Owens of Canton, Amy Swancey of Jasper, Jody Sutton of Jasper, Delana Heard, Mindy Warbington, Paul Warbington, Amanda Spence, Jeremiah Spence; great-grandchildren, Sadie Spence, Ayla Heard, Clare Heard, Samuel Warbington, Jessica Massey, Liam Swancey, Maggie Swancey, Laura Swancey, Mia Sutton, Cade Sutton, Caleb Patterson, Haley Owens; great-great-grandchild, Blaine Massey.  Several other relatives also survive. 

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Fairview Baptist Church with Reverend Edwin Bishop and Reverend Buck Parker officiating.  Interment will follow at Price Creek Baptist Church.  

Arrangements were entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory.

Don Ballew

July 9 1938 – February 11 2017   

 

Mr. Don Ballew, 78, of Talking Rock Ga. passed away February 11, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Ballew is survived by his wife, Fran Ballew; daughter and son-in law, Ginger and Mark Griffin of Douglasville Ga.; son. Bobby Ballew Jr. of Douglasville; three step children. Dennis Kirk of Austell, Greg Kirk of Atlanta and Tracy Wolfenbarger of Jacksonville Fl.

Grandchildren are Chrystal Aceros, Sabrina Granese and David Griffin. Four great grandchildren also survive.

A memorial will be held May 21th 2017.

 

Lavern Butler

Nancy Lavern Stanfield Butler was at home in Eupora, MS when she passed, following an extended battle with rheumatoid arthritis that developed into rheumatoid lung disease, February 6, 2017. She came to life June 7, 1945 having been born to her parents, Rev. Will A. Stanfield and Carrie Hammontree Stanfield, who preceeded her in passing. Lavern had one brother, Harold Stanfield and one sister, Barbara Sue Stanfield Hembree, both of whom preceeded her in death. 

Lavern is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Bill C. Butler, a retired teacher. 

In Pickens County, Lavern is survived by her sister-in-law, Jewel Stanfield, and nieces Debbie Rooker, Diane Quinton and Kay Stokes; nephew, Butch Stanfield; and a host of extended family and friends.

Lavern was a speech pathologist and helped children overcome speech problems for 25 years in the public school system of Webster County, Mississippi. 

She will be missed so much by her friends and family.

Lavern was a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church in Jasper, Ga. She will be at rest in the Cross Roads Cemetery next to the Cross Roads Baptist Church near Mantee, Mississippi. 

The funeral service for Lavern was held Feb. 10, 2017.

Mary Watson

Mary E. Watson, 67, of Canton, GA passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017 at her residence. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Childers, Rev. Michael McPherson, Rev. James Thompson and Rev. Glenn King officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents,  Jim and Ruby Pharr;   Brothers,  Donald Pharr, James Pharr and Franklin D. Pharr

Survivors include her husband, Douglas Watson; daughter & son-in-law, Star and Travis Johnson; brother, Paul Pharr; sister & brother-in-law, Betty and Jack Green;

sister-in-law, Helen Pharr; granddaughter, Taylor and Andy Almonte; grandson, Ross Johnson; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews also survive.

Larry Toney

November 12, 1937 – February 13, 2017

 

  Mr. Larry O’Neil Toney, 79, of Woodstock, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. Larry was born November 12, 1937 to James Buford and Marie Fleming Toney in Pacolet, South Carolina.  

Mr. Toney was a 1960 Industrial Engineer graduate of Georgia Tech, a member of the Big Canoe Chapel, a volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club, on the board for the Community Thrift Store, and a member of the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Advisory Board of Directors. He was very active with the Pickens County Republican Party and was the Pickens County Republican Chairman for several years. Although he was committed to serving his community, he was devoted to his family and making everyone feel special.

  He is survived by the love of his life, Alma Toney of Woodstock; his brother and sister-in-law, James Edward and Betty Toney; children, Karen and Steve LaMarsh, Scott and Carla Toney, Alan and Tracy Toney, Michele Toney; grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa, Mark, Jessica, Melissa, Megan, Paul, Jessica, Davis, Parker & Benton Cole; great-grandchildren, Sienna, Dean, Savannah, and Harper.

A celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 16 at Big Canoe Chapel with Reverend Len Walker officiating. Immediately following the service, a reception for family and friends was held in the fellowship hall next door to the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia, 101 Freedom Way, Jasper, Georgia, 30143.

Douglas Johnson

With our hearts full of joy for a life well lived, we mourn the passing of Douglas Mark Johnson, 62, of Jasper, GA. 

Born January 11, 1955, in Tyler, MN, to Virgil and Margaret Johnson, who preceded him in death, Doug graduated from Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, CA. He joined the U.S. Air Force, served in Vietnam, and earned degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and Regis University. He worked as an air traffic controller before joining IBM in Longmont, CO. After a career at IBM that spanned more than three decades, Doug retired from his position as an IT Technical Solutions executive. He was an active member of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, North Georgia Veterans, the Pickens County Sportsman’s Club, and the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family. He enjoyed quiet evenings on the porch with his wife; going on adventures with his daughter; playing with his grandchildren; riding his Harley; cheering for Clemson; and using his therapy dog, Scooter, to spread happiness. Doug was always willing to lend a hand, tell a joke, or share a meal.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Brickle Johnson; son and daughter-in-law Corey and Erin Johnson of Erie, CO, and their children, Cassidy and Leo; daughter Tara Johnson and her boyfriend, Jeremy Cooley, of Atlanta, GA; and his siblings, Wallace and Linda Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Michael and Sharon Johnson, and Phyllis Schmidt. His sister, Donna Willard, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Jasper on February 27at 10 a.m., followed by light refreshments in the parish hall. Interment will be at 1 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.

Masonic Resolution on the death of Brother Wallace Frank Sutton

    To the Brethren of E.W. Hightower Lodge #679 F&AM, Nelson, Ga.:

Whereas: On Feb. 16, 2017, it was the will of the Grand Architect of Heaven and Earth to call from labor to refreshment our beloved Brother Wallace Frank Sutton, 84 years of age, and a 62 year student of the Craft;

Whereas: We, his brethren, feel keenly his absence from our midst and while we humbly bow to the will of our Infinite Creator, we desire to make a suitable memorial;

    Therefore: Be it resolved that E.W. Hightower Lodge #679 F&AM express to the family of our departed brother deepest sympathy and wish to express our gratitude for his life of service among us.

    Be it further resolved that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family of our departed brother, a copy to be spread on our minutes and a copy to be published in the Pickens County Progress.
