Annie Chapman

            Anna “Annie” Chapman, 90, of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at her daughter’s home in Marietta. 

            She was born May 18, 1933 to Ernest Griffin Denson and Lula Prather Denson  in Jasper.  She was a graduate of Pickens High School, then worked as Mr. Bryce’s secretary at Georgia Marble Company from 1950 until 1955.  She then took on her most rewarding job as a homemaker until 1972.  After her children were in school, she took a job with HD Lee for 17 years along with other small side jobs along the way. Annie loved to tell about trying on the boots of Hank Williams Jr.

            Annie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tom Mattocks of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Guy and Juanita Chapman of Jasper; grandchildren, Paul McDaniel of Talking Rock, Lindsay and Matt Kidd of Canton, Crysanna and Corey Hicks of Jasper, Jarrod and April Chapman of Jasper; great-grandchildren, Gavin McDaniel, Elijah McDaniel, Joshua Kidd, Anna Grace Kidd, and Madelyn Hicks.  Several nieces, nephews, and other family members also survive.

            She was preceded in death by parents, Griff and Lula Denson; brother, Madison Denson; sisters, Mary Lois Denson DeBoard, Ruth Denson Gibson; and baby sister, Lola Mae Denson.  

            Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2024 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Robert Brown

            Robert L. Brown, 92, peacefully passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024.  Mr. Brown, or affectionately known by his family as “Pop,” worked as a contractor for several decades in Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia.  He and his wife, Anna, had four children: Rebecca Boyda (Tom), Robert Brown, Bonny List (Mark), and Brian Brown (Rebecca).  He supported his family with a kind and generous heart.  He loved teaching all the children and grandchildren to play golf and bridge.  He was witty and patient, and he will be greatly missed.  He leaves a legacy of hard work, determination, and demonstrating love through actions. 

            He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; his second wife, Jackie; his sons, Robert and Brian, and his son-in-law, Mark.  

            He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Boyda and Bonny List; his 14 grandchildren; and his 14 great-grandchildren. 

            There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m., April 27, 2024 at Jasper United Methodist Church.  All family and friends are welcome.   In remembrance of Mr. Brown, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Sarcoma Foundation of America. 

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory of Jasper. 

Janet Maulden

            Janet Renee Maulden, 55, of Ellijay, Georgia passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024. No services are planned at this time. Care and trust placed with In Their Honor of Jasper.

Essie Godfrey

            Essie Faye Godfrey, 82, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Pruitt Health Care.  Essie Faye was born on May 19, 1941 to Grady and Thelma Carver in Jasper.

            Essie Faye is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Denise Godfrey of Hill City; son, Ronald Godfrey of Talking Rock; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tony Young of Talking Rock; grandchildren, Chris Godfrey, Brandon Queen, Natasha Hill, Kathleen Bradley, Jessica Allen, William Young; great-grandchildren, Jax, Emma, Ethan, Lane, Jacob, Wyatt, Cierra,  Kendra, Sadie, Pasley; sister, Mary Lou Pettigrew; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Joyce Carver; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Annie May Carver and good friend, John Cannon. Several nieces, nephews, and other family members also survive.

            Essie Faye was preceded in death by husband, Roy Godfrey; daughter, Lois Downes; and brother, James Carver.          

            Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2024  in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Buck Parker officiating. Interment followed in the Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Jeff Rickman

            Jeffrey (Jeff) Rickman was born July 4,1966 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, to his late parents Henry Lee & Linda Spruell Rickman.

            Jeff had a strong faith in God instilled in him from his parents, and he shared his faith through many acts of kindness. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and his love of music, and singing was contagious.

            Jeff had a long career in the sales of HVAC products, and later enjoyed being a tobacconist where his gift of relationships afforded him many new friends.

            Jeff never missed a Georgia Bulldogs, or an Atlanta Falcons football game. He enjoyed scary movies, and had a love of all animals. His smile, and laugh will forever be missed.

            Jeff is survived by his wife Stephanie Martin Rickman of Jasper; his children,  Donovan (Trina) Rickman of Adairsville, Katie (Brian) Knight of Cartersville, Garrett (Savannah) Rickman of Kennesaw; grandchildren, Isaac, Wyatt, Nate, Emmett, Hank, Liam and Kenny; brothers, David (Kathy) Rickman and Corey (Zhanna) Rickman of Canton; father and mother-in law, Frank and Barbara Martin of Jasper. Many precious uncles, aunts, and cousins also survive.

            Visitation will be Saturday, February 3, 2024 from noon until the service hour of 2 p.m.

            Care and trust placed with In Their Honor of Jasper.

Ethel Ray

June 22, 1935 – January 29, 2024

            Ethel Jean Ray, 88, of Tate, Ga, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 29, 2024.  Ethel was born in Jasper, GA on June 22, 1935 to the late Mr. Cicero Ray and Mrs. Maggie Morris Ray.

            Ethel is survived by her sister, Oleta Kimball and a host of nieces and nephews.

            The family will receive friends at Cagle Funeral Home, Jasper, GA on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 10-12.

            A graveside service for Ethel will be conducted at Sunrise Memorial Gardens following the visitation with the Rev. Larry Holden officiating.

Sandra Weir

            Sandra B. Weir, 83, of Jasper, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024 at The Retreat at Jasper.  She was born September 12, 1940 to Thomas and Edwina Brazil in Atlanta, Georgia.

            Sandra is survived by her husband, Tom Weir of Jasper; son, Robert Burns of Atlanta; daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Joel Jones of Kingsport, Tennessee, Melanie Costley of Oregon, Carol and Larry Morris of Grayson, Susan and Gary Ross of Douglasville, son, Jeff Weir of Cumming; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother and sister-in-law, Lance and Gloria Brazil of Jacksonville, Florida.

            She was preceded in death by husband, George Burns and baby sister, Barbara Brazil.

            Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 1, 2024 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Terry Burress officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery: 1680 Westview Drive SW; Atlanta, GA 30310.

            The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Thursday, February 1 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

            In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Northside Church of Christ in Jasper.

Jerry Garrett

            Jerry Lester Garrett, 67, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.  He was born October 25, 1956 in Laurens County, Georgia. 

            Mr. Garrett is survived by daughter, Christy Raines Williard of Cartersville; son, Jerry Ray Garrett of Cartersville; son, Andy Garrett of Cartersville; daughter, Jennifer Garrett of Cartersville; son, Levi Taylor Monroe of Caretersville; grandchildren, Evelyn Garrett, Morgan Garrett, Grace Garrett; brothers, Randy Garrett, Ronald Garrett, Gary Garrett; sister, Doris Barrett; niece, Shanda and Jeff Bohannon of Jasper.  Extended family members also survive.

            A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Jessy Hall

            Jessica “Jessy” Franklin Hall, 39, of Ellijay, GA passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024. Jessy was born on December 17, 1984, in Atlanta, GA to her parents David Riley Franklin Sr. and Brenda Faye Cornett. Jessy was a member of Mountaintown Baptist Church.

            Survivors include husband Cole Hall of Ellijay, GA; mother, Brenda Faye Bruce of Jasper; brothers, David Riley Franklin Jr. of Ellijay, GA, Joseph Riley Franklin, and Paige of Ringold, GA, Steve Bruce and Mariah of Jasper, GA; grandmother, Linda Sherwood of Blue Ridge, GA and several nieces and nephews and great aunts.

            Jessy had a magnetic personality. She deeply loved her husband, her family, and her friends. Jessy was a constant encouragement to many and brought the best out of others. She was a kind and selfless friend who was attentive to the needs of those she loved. She used her gifts as she worked in the medical field and as an in-home caregiver. Jessy will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, nurturing heart, and endearing smile.

            The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday Feb. 1, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

            The memorial service will be held Friday, February 2, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Mountaintown Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Snider officiating and singing by Eric Colson. The family kindly requests that no food be brought to the funeral home.
