Jake Padgett

            On November 2, 2021, John (Jake) L. Padgett, Sr. lost his month-long battle against Covid pneumonia at the age of 81. Jake was raised in Marble Hill and moved throughout Georgia during his 45+ years of gospel preaching. After moving back to Jasper around 2005, he and his wife, Frances, retired to Lake Oconee in 2017.

            He truly and fully lived his life and we wish to celebrate the laughter and love he brought not only to his family, but to his friends and church families as well. There will be an informal gathering on Saturday, January 15, from 1-4 p.m. at Union Hill Community Center, 1780 AJ Land Road in Canton for those who wish to attend.

Betty Spence

            Betty Jean Griffin Spence passed away January 5, 2022. She was born on April 2, 1937 to the late Homer Lee and Alma Jane Griffin. Betty married the love of her life, Luke J. Spence Sr. in 1953 and together raised six children. She was a wonderfully devoted mother and adored all children. She was an avid flower gardener and she also enjoyed reading, cooking, and caring for her family.                               Betty will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Her family is rejoicing as she is in her heavenly home in a glorious new body. She is surrounded by loved ones who have been awaiting her arrival. May all accept the same blessed hope.

            In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband; Luke Jackson Spence Sr., her son; Luke Jackson “Jackie” Spence Jr., grandson; Luke James Spence, brothers; Leon Griffin and Denver Griffin. Betty is survived by her children; Robin (Mike) Webb, Thomas “Keith” Spence, Gregory (Robyn) Spence, Brian (Mindi) Spence, Lisa (Scott) Johnson, sister; Louise Anderson, grandchildren; Christy Rodgers, Lance Price, Jodi Price, Misty Duren, Justin Spence, Bobbi Spence, Michael Rega, Sidney Johnson, Spencer Johnson, and 12 great-grandchildren.

            A private graveside service was held on Monday, January 10, 2022 beginning at 11 a.m. with Jason Duren officiating.

            Clark Funeral Home is honored to care for the Spence family during this difficult time.

Art Oviedo

            Arthur “Art” Oviedo, 70, of Jasper, Georgia, a United States Marines Veteran, passed away Monday, January 3, 2022. No services are planned at this time. Care and trust placed with In Their Honor of Jasper Funerals and Cremations.

Jennifer Townsend

            Jennifer Townsend, 33, of Talking Rock, Georgia passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.  

            She is survived by her parents, Danny and Beverly Townsend of Talking Rock, son, Asher Jo Townsend of Talking Rock, sister and brother-in-law, Jessica and Eddie Williams of Talking Rock, brother and sister-in-law, Joshua and Tara Townsend of Talking Rock, brother, Nate Townsend of Talking Rock, grandfather, Kenneth McArthur of Talking Rock, nieces and nephews, Blake and Kendall Williams, Braydon Townsend and Bryce and Lexi Wright. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 11, 2022  at 2 p.m. at Whitestone Baptist Church  with Reverend Jamie Kerr and Reverend Steven Chapman officiating. The interment followed in the church cemetery.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bonnie Mulkey

            Bonnie Mulkey, 79, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022. 

            Bonnie is survived by children, Terry Lamar Mulkey of Jasper, Donald Mulkey of Jasper; grandchildren, Tony Mulkey of Jasper, Tracy Mulkey of Jasper, Amanda Parton of Clayton Community, Michael Mulkey of Hinton; siblings, William Daniel Ray of Jasper;  Armenda Brooks of Jasper, and Clara Walker of Marion, North Carolina.

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 13, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

            The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, January 12, 2022  from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Janie Carver

            Janie Buchanan Carver, 88,  of Jasper, Georgia passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at her home. She was born December 17, 1933 to Herman and Grace Crowe Buchanan in Marble Hill, Georgia.  

            Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Revere Fowler, Jasper, Son and Daughter-in-law, Jay and Sandy Carver, Brother, Gene Buchanan, Marietta, grandchildren, Corey (Leann) Fowler, Acworth, Cade Fowler, Valdosta, Jenny (Britt) Rose, Canton, great-grandchildren, Tara Fowler, Mack Fowler, and Riley Williams, sister-in-love, Jewell Buchanan, and several nieces and nephews. 

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Weldon Carver, brother, Hallman Buchanan, sisters, Guanita Ray and Myrna Denson.           

            Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 9th, 2022 at Roper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Day officiating. Interment followed in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens. 

            In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marble Valley Friends, at P. O. Box 51 Tate, Georgia 30177 or a charity of your choice.

            For the protection of the family and friends, masks are encouraged to be worn during visitation and the funeral service.

Lloyd Gifford

            Lloyd Eugene Gifford, 92, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away after a brief struggle with COVID19 on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. He was born July 8, 1929 to Melvin and Gladys Gifford in Pleasanton, Kansas. 

            Lloyd is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Gifford of Winfield, Illinois; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Betty Gifford of Carson City, Nevada; grandchildren, Christina and Anthony D’Arco of Lombard, Illinois, Gregory and Annie Gifford of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Kevin Gifford and Athena Monroy of Mesa, Arizona, Michelle Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada, Bob Gossett of Oakland, California; sister-in-law, Reba Padgett of Jasper; niece, Karen West. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He was a loving great-grandfather to Sarah, Lewis, Addison and Grant.

            He was preceded in death by his wife to whom he was married for over 50 years, Sarah Marie Gifford; parents, Melvin and Gladys Gifford; brother, Gerald Gifford; and sister, Wilma Kluck.     

            Lloyd was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and an avid Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan.

            Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Meadows officiating. Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

            The family accepted flowers or donations may be made in Lloyd’s honor to Alzheimer’s Association or Paralyzed Veterans of America.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Charlene Goss

            Charlene Goss, 74, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at her home.  She was born July 4, 1947 to Charlie and Flora Mae Crowe in Jasper.

            Charlene is survived by her children, Joey and Donna Roper of Ball Ground, Jerri and John Black of Talking Rock; sisters, Martha Duncan of Nelson, Mary Pierce of Canton; brother, Timmy O’Bryant of Marble Hill; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.    

            The family held  a Graveside Service 1 p.m., Saturday, January 8, 2022 at  Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Betty Robinson

            Betty J. Robinson, 83, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at her home. 

            Betty is survived by her son, Rick Ryan of Jasper; daughter, Vicki Stone of Jasper; grandchildren, Pewee Mulkey and Laura Cantrell, Todd Stone, Stacy and Jody Buckles, Shelly and Nathan Holcombe, Kelly and Doug Wood, Chris Goldey, Tasha Goldey, Corena Goldey and Michael Price; and 16 great-grandchildren.

            She was preceded in death by her husband Guy Robinson.

            Funeral services were held in the Roper Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 2 p.m with Reverend Bub Hightower officiating. Interment followed in The Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Fred Stanley

September 3, 1923 -January 6, 2022

            Mr. Tom Stanley, 98, of Canton, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022 at The Retreat at Canton.

            Mr. Stanley is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David & Bobbie Stanley of Canton; daughters and sons-in-law, Connie & Mike Ethridge of Woodstock, and Jo & Mark Hall of Waleska; sister, Jean Stanley of Okala, FL; 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

            Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Macedonia Memorial Park, with Rev. Greg Meadows officiating.

            Pallbearers: Jason Stanley, Chad Stanley, Trevor Hall, Luke Hall, and Cliff Ethridge.

            The family requests in lieu of flowers, donate to Jasper United Methodist Church.

Richard Cote

            Richard Cote, 89, ofJasper, Georgia a United States Army Veteran and retired Fire Chief, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022. No services are planned at this time. Care and trust placed with In Their Honor of Jasper Funerals and Cremations.

Vicky Thomason

            Vicky Lee Thomason, 66, of Warner Robbins, Georgia, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022. She was born January 24, 1955 to Charles Bill and Opal Watson in Pickens County. She proudly served her country in the United States Air Force for 32 years.

            Vicky is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gabriel and Jennifer Thomason of Bonaire; sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Peggy Blackwell of Ball Ground; grandchildren, Morgan Thomason, Lillian Thomason, Katherine Thomason; nephews and nieces, Keith and Angela Blackwell, Brent and Ashley Blackwell.  Great nieces and other relatives also survive.       

            Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, January 10, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

            The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Heart of Georgia Hospice Center or the American Cancer Society in honor of Vicky.

Johnny Wright

            Johnny Larry Wright, 78, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. He was born to John Clarence and Louise Wright on December 13, 1943 in Gilmer County.

            Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wanda Wright of Jasper; niece and nephew, Susie and Steven Chapman; and other nephews, friends, and relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Louise Wright; his brother, Jerry Wright; and his sister, Carolyn Garland.

            A Graveside Service was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Reverend Steven Chapman officiating. Pall Bearers were  Jacob Chapman, Nick Martins, nephew Jodi Payne, nephew Michael Garland, Ray Roberts, Russell Segars, Shane Townley. Honorary Pall Bearer was nephew, Mitchell Garland.

            The family requests that you do not bring food to the funeral home.

Ellen Coffman

            Ellen Coffman, 78, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 10,  2022. No services are planned at this time. Care and trust placed with In Their Honor of Jasper Funerals and Cremations.

Helen Petty

            Helen Beck Petty, 94, of Talking Rock, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Ellijay, Georgia. Helen was born March 12, 1927 to Walter and Cleo Beck in Washington Township, Ohio, and was one of six children: Nathan, Isabelle, Ruth, Laura, and Richard, who all preceded her in death.

            Helen was married to Ray C. Eaton, who preceded her in death and was the father of her children Mike and Cathy. She was later married to Howard Stotts and John Carling Petty, who also preceded her in death.

            Helen worked in the payroll division of the Federal Aviation Administration for many years and was a longtime Methodist. She traveled the world with family and friends and enjoyed sewing, cooking, and games, especially cards. If there was a Grandmother Hall of Fame she would be in it.

            Helen is survived by her daughter Cathy Eaton Jones and son-in-law David Bevel Jones of Jasper GA; son Michael Eaton and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Eaton of Morganton GA; grandchildren Shannon and William Clancy of New Orleans LA; Cameron and Brittany Jones of Decatur GA; Deanna and Andrew Morgan of McDonough GA; Nicholas and Stephanie Eaton of Jonesboro GA; great-grandchildren Louisa Helen Clancy, Eli David Jones, Callahan Mae Jones, Dakota Eaton, Madelyn Eaton, Mason Eaton, Ray Morgan, and Thomas Carter Morgan. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Allison Eaton.

            A memorial service will be held at a later date at First United Methodist Church in Jasper, Georgia. Her ashes will be interred in a family plot in Galion, Ohio.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Jeanette Chalker

            Jeanette Eileen Chalker, 64, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Northside Hospital Cherokee. She was born May 21, 1957 to Jacob and Myrtle Ruth Knighten in Chicago, Illinois.

            Jeanette is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Angela Patterson and Josh Lane of Ball Ground, Wendy Stobaugh and Demetrius Holder of Ball Ground; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

            She was preceded in death by husband, Ronnie Chalker, and granddaughter, Jamie Patterson    

            A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the New Life Apostolic of Jasper.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Shirley Fambrough

            Shirley Fambrough, 81, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Monday, January 10, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside in Jasper. 

            Shirley is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Billy Ray of Jasper, Robbie and Wanda Ray of Jasper, Keith Ray of Ball Ground; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by son, Kevin Ray.          

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 12, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Linda Cantrell

July 29, 1947 – January 7, 2022

            Mrs. Linda Cantrell, 74, of Jasper, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

            Mrs. Cantrell is survived by her husband, William Cantrell of Jasper; brother, Frank Sihock of Rowland Heights, CA; sisters, Goldie Cook of Nunnelee, TN, Aunda Muraviov of Valinda, CA, Ola Schmidt of Claremont, CA, Luella King of Independence, CA, and Roberta Anthony of Claremont, CA.

            No services are scheduled at this time.

            In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help with funeral expenses.
