Bob Douglas
John Robert Douglas, Jr. (Bob) passed away January 21, 2023 in Jasper, Georgia following a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Multiple Myeloma.
Preceded in death by his mother and father, Vivian Douglas Walker and John Robert Douglas, Sr; his stepfather, Robert Walker and his brother Charles “Chuck” Douglas. Bob is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Diane Goodwin Douglas; his sister and best friend Bonnie Cash; his children Brian and Melinda and his grandchildren: Christian, Evan and Vivian.
Bob grew up in Dayton, OH with his parents and siblings, he developed a talent and a love of football early on where he “played both sides” he liked to say. He was recruited to play for the Army and was headed to Officer Candidate School when an unfortunate incident at the age of 11 involving blue suede shoes and car theft came back to haunt him thus thwarting any aspirations for a military career. He went on to play for FSU where he was also an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was there that he met his soulmate, Diane Goodwin. Upon first meeting Ms. Goodwin, the young handsome football player with a devilish reputation inquired what she was doing the rest of her life, and the rest was history. He continued to be passionately involved with FSU, Phi Delta Theta and Diane until his last breath.
Bob was a brilliant financial mind, after receiving his MBA from Emory University he went on to high level positions with Trust Company, Montag and Caldwell, and INA where he was instrumental in the merge that formed CIGNA. He was a principal at Atlanta Capital Management and attempted retirement following the sale of ACM; however he would continue to manage money for high wealth clients until Alzheimer’s robbed him of the ability to do so.
Bob was gregarious. He loved playing practical jokes and he loved to laugh. He adored his family and friends and never met a stranger. His favorite pastime; however, was the daily ride to the mailbox in the golf cart with his wife because he could not survive without his newspapers. He and his wife loved traveling all over the world often with groups of friends. He loved to dance, often like no one was watching. He loved God. He loved his church in Jasper, and spent most Sundays as an usher. He loved to play golf.
Bob was an amazing husband, father and grandfather and took each of these roles to heart. He was in the delivery room holding his daughter’s hand when his granddaughter was born. He took his son under his wing and taught him the financial business. He never spent more than a week away from his wife. He will be fiercely missed.
A celebration of Bob’s life and memorial service will be held on his birthday, Friday, September 29th at 3 p.m. at the memorial gardens at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Jasper, GA. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
