Laura Link

She didn’t want an obituary. Let’s start with that. The woman who began her career writing obituaries and wrote so many for her local paper and community didn’t want this.

Laura McGregor Link wanted to be remembered by those she loved and those she knew for all she was, the way she was, and who she was. She felt that could happen without a formal obituary.

She was born in Atlanta on June 12, 1934, a child of the Great Depression. She found some of her happiest days in the 1950s with poodle skirts and a life filled with friends and dances.

She would become a member of the Phi Mu sorority at the University of Alabama where she graduated in 1956.

She worked at the Atlanta Journal and Constitution newspaper, writing obituaries and working on other news desks. While there, she also interviewed Sir Edmund Hillary and took Brenda Lee around town.

Laura would go on to hold jobs at Pace Academy where her children were in school. She would work at the Peachtree Road Methodist Church preschool with her close friend Carolyn Brooks. She was also a wedding coordinator there.

She worked at Emory University’s School of Medical Education and traveled the world putting on conferences for different departments.

Later in life, she planned weddings in Big Canoe where she moved in 1996.

In Big Canoe, she was an important and active part of the community. She was an avid supporter of the Black Bear Project. She volunteered at the voting precinct, and she worked for years as a writer and proofreader for the community paper, Smoke Signals.

She loved to garden, sew, and read. She loved classical music and time with her beloved friends.

Laura passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at the age of 92, surrounded by her family.

She lived a life of endurance, humor, individuality, and determination. For those she knew—her lifelong and recent friends, her community and caregivers, her family and extended family— her memory lives on.

Survivors include her daughter Karen Domenico and her son Richard Link, son-in-law Lawrence Domenico, daughter-in-law Kristin Siembieda, and grandchildren Will and Katie Domenico. She was preceded in death by her father, Max Emerson McGregor, and her mother, Jessie Ellzey McGregor.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on September 23, 2026 at the Big Canoe Chapel at 2 p.m. A short reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Big Canoe Animal Rescue (where she got her cats) or Good Samaritan.

Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

David Fitts

David Fitts, 73, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2026 at Northside Hospital Forsyth.  David was born on April 1, 1953 to George and Lorene Mulkey Fitts in Tate, Georgia.

David was preceded in death by his parents, George Ray Fitts and Lorene Mulkey Fitts.

The family accepted flowers and gift cards.

Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

James Grant

James Lucius Grant, a cherished husband, brother and friend, died peacefully on August 26, 2026 after a long illness. Born on January 26, 1942 in Jasper, Georgia, James was the beloved son of the late Lucius Lanier and Ora Emolese Grant.

A resident of the Danville area since 2006, James was known for his warmth, kindness, and integrity.  A proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, he studied mathematics, civil engineering, and hydrology. After receiving his Ph.D., he began his professional career as a mathematical analyst at Lockheed Martin in Atlanta. He later served as chief engineer for engineering consulting firms in Georgia and in Kentucky. In 1983, he founded James L. Grant and Associates in Denver, Colorado, to provide specialized services in environmental engineering, groundwater systems, and geotechnical design.  His many clients across the country valued his strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism. His dedicated team of 40 employees knew him as a strong, generous, and inspirational leader. His commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege to work with him.  When not working, he enjoyed fly-fishing in the sparkling mountain streams of Colorado, spending time with friends, and sharing a good story. Worship played an essential role in James’ life; he found comfort and community as a member at Grace Baptist Church of Danville.

James is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan Grant; his dear brother, Richard T. Grant (Jan) of Tallapoosa, Georgia; and his adored sister-in-law, Kelli K. Pope (Steve) of Clarksville, Indiana; and numerous other extended family members in Georgia and Kentucky, as well as friends, who mourn his passing. His absence will be keenly felt by all who were fortunate enough to share in the great adventure of his life’s journey.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Stith Funeral Home in Danville, with Rev. Frank Tate officiating. He was buried with family in Jasper, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Heritage Hospice of Danville.

The family wishes to express profound gratitude to The Willows of Harrodsburg’s management, nurses, caregivers, and therapist teams who provided quality care and an uplifting environment of encouragement and support during his long illness.

Zack Fletcher

Sitting on a boat beside his father, holding a fishing pole, is how the family of Zack Merlin Fletcher (3.1.1955) envisions the moments of his afterlife. On September 1, 2026 he departed from his earthly existence and entered his eternal home joining his many heavenly family members waiting on him including his mother; Betty Mitchell, father Dewitt Fletcher, and brother Ronnie. In his final moments he was surround by his family who filled the room with love and laughter (he would have expected that!) as he took his final breath. Married to Marie Jones Fletcher for over 50 years he also leaves many behind to carry on his legacy: daughter: Brandi (Sherman) McEntire; son: Kevin Fletcher (Jodie); daughter: Casie (Lewis) Ledford. Grandchildren: Nathan, Carter, and Ellah McEntire. Shannon Brooks, Wyatt (Jade) and Claire Ledford. Khloie and Averie Fletcher and Jadielynn McKenzie. Great grandchildren: Jaxon and Maverick Ledford. Sister: Jeannie Barwick and brother, Don Fletcher. Special cousin, Janice McGraw and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a Zack of all trades and had many different jobs in his life. He worked for the City of Jasper, a mechanic, a welder, he drove a semi-truck and was a beloved babysitter of his grandchildren. You were never a stranger for long when you were around Zack. He could talk to anyone about anything. He had a garden that seemed to get bigger and bigger every year. He loved to grow his own food and was passionate about getting things just right for the best harvest in each season. Most importantly he loved to make you laugh. He had a Donald Duck impression that was spot on and so irresistibly funny no kid – or adult- stood a chance of not smiling or laughing. His greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. He loved to spoil all his grandbabies, and they all thought he hung the moon. He was always a phone call away if his kids needed him (or a niece too!) His passion was having a huge garden and tinkering with anything that he could fix. He was a fixer. If it was broken he could fix it. He was quite creative in many ways with those fixes and sometimes those he wanted to fix were people. He would try as hard as he could to fix things- even us sometimes. He had a huge heart and he loved big. That big heart leaves a Zack shaped void in the life of his loved ones who deeply miss him. We wish you peace Dad, Papa, Brother, and Uncle and may we all love big and laugh more just as you did. Zack, being the sweet and simple man that he was, requested no funeral service only to be cremated and his ashes be spread by his family at his favorite fishing spot in FL.

The family thanks all those who have stood beside them the last week especially the staff of Piedmont Mountainside Jasper ICU nurses — and in particular Jamie and Brittany.

Throughout her career, Artie made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students, many of whom remembered her fondly and continued to appreciate the encouragement, guidance, and support she gave them.

A gifted athlete, Artie was an avid golfer who won the Women’s Golf Tournament at Big Canoe. She remained committed to fitness throughout her life and enjoyed a variety of sports and physical activities.

In her later years, Artie devoted much of her time and energy to helping others through charitable organizations and nonprofits. She volunteered with Big Canoe Animal Rescue; Angels on Horseback, where she helped provide therapeutic experiences for children with disabilities; and Good Samaritan, where she helped prepare school lunches for children in need.

Artie was also a remarkably talented and accomplished artist. She created and sold her paintings throughout her life and generously donated her artwork in support of others and charitable causes. Her creativity extended well beyond her own art, and she especially cherished working on creative projects with her grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Artie and Lee were longtime, active members of Holy Family Episcopal Church, where they worshiped and served their community together for more than 25 years.

Those who knew Artie will remember her quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and remarkable ability to bring laughter and warmth to a conversation. She was personable, a thoughtful listener, deeply sentimental, and profoundly devoted to her family. Artie was someone who always showed up when the people she loved needed her, offering her support, encouragement, and presence.

Her creativity, generosity, humor, and genuine love for her family touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

A private family service will be held.
