Kenneth West

September 12, 1930 – September 23, 2022

            Mr. Kenneth West, 92, of Jasper, passed away Friday, September 23, 2022 at Wildwood Health Care.

            Mr. West is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie & Lynn West of Holly Springs, Tony West of Canton, and Michael & Shirley West of Talking Rock; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa & Christopher Tippens of Talking Rock; eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2022 at Sharp Top Baptist Church, with Rev. Autry Dean officiating.

            Interment was at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, following the funeral service.

            Pallbearers: Adrian West, Daniel West, Garrett Tippens, Don Mathis, Tony Tippens, and Jeff Padgett.

William Padgett

            Mr. William Douglas Padgett, 50, of Ellijay, passed away Sunday, September 11th, 2022.

            Mr. Padgett was born on April 20th, 1972 in Jasper to Patrick Padgett and Patricia Young Padgett. He was a truck driver for Chastain Septic Tank & Grading. Mr. Padgett is preceded in death by his father, Patrick Padgett.

            Survivors include his wife, Amy Padgett; mother, Patricia Padgett; three sons, Christopher Padgett, Cody Padgett, and Coleman Padgett; daughter, Cassie Padgett; two sisters, Edie Padgett and Melissa Ledbetter; three grandchildren, Ethan Edmondson, Kenzlie Edmondson, and Makinna Padgett; and grandchild to be, Avery Douglass, also survives.

            Funeral services were held Friday, September 16th at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Pat Shelton officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park. Pallbearers serving will be Daniel Crawford, Jeremy Hamrick, Robert Allen, and Buddy Davis.

            In lieu of flowers and food, donations can be made to Amy Padgett to help with funeral expenses.

            Bernhardt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Hunt

            Mrs. Wanda Sue Hunt, 75, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Friday, September 23, 2022 at her residence. 

            Survivors include her husband, James Hunt of Jasper; son, Scott Caylor of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Tara Caylor of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Brandy Hunt of Jasper; son, Jimmy Hunt of Jasper; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Paul Crowe of Tate; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Louise Chumley; daughter, Cindy Caylor Brown; and sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Donald Prather.  

            Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Buck Parker, Grant Wade, Adam Parker, and Nathan Smith officiating. The interment followed in the Lake Forest Memorial Park Cemetery.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Emily Walker

            Emily Kaye Walker, 28, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at her home.  She was born November 21, 1993 to Randy and Paula Walker in Rome, Georgia.

            Emily is survived by her parents, Randy and Paula Walker of Jasper; grandparents, Paul and Judy Kennemur of Jasper; aunts, Lisa Kennemur and Suzy Sale of Fairfax, Virginia; uncles and aunts, Steven and Eve Kennemur of Resaca, Lamar and Diane Walker of Cherokee, North Carolina. Several cousins and other relatives also survive.  She was preceded in death by grandparents, Marion and Christine Walker.

            Graveside services were  held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2022 at  Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Danny Baker officiating.  

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Jimmy Weaver

            Jimmy B. Weaver, 74, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. 

            Survivors include his  wife, Pam Weaver of Marble Hill; son, Wesley Benjamin Weaver of Tate; brother and sister-in-law, George and Brenda Weaver of Jasper; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Larry Ellington of Lula; brother, John “Johnny” William Weaver of Jasper; grandchildren, Webster Blue Weaver, Riley Cole Weaver; and several nieces and nephews.        

            Graveside services will be held Sunday, October 2, 2022 at  2 p.m. in the Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with William Blackwell and Kevin Roper officiating. 

            The family requests no flowers to be sent to the funeral home.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Sonny Underwood Jr.

            Doss Mathis “Sonny” Underwood Jr., 79, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at Pruitt Health Care.   

            Sonny is survived by his daughter, Donna Underwood (Doog Cagle) of Jasper; grandson, Daniel Grizzle (Kelly Wright) of Jasper; sister, Diane Underwood of Jasper; and niece, Jamie Padgett of Jasper.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Underwood; father, DM Underwood Sr; mother, Peggy Underwood; and sister, Jayne.        

            Funeral services were held at 5 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home.  Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens: 1140 West Church Street; Jasper, GA 30143.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Steven Prather

            Steven Garry Prather, 47, of Canton, Georgia, passed away Friday, September 16, 2022 at his home. He was born December 30, 1974 to Garry and Ann Prather in Marietta, Georgia. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. 

            Steve is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Amanda Prather of Canton; sons, Jordan Prather (Melissa) of Jasper, Jacob Prather (Samirah) of Jasper; parents, Garry and Ann Prather of Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, Adam and Kelly Prather of Jasper; grandchildren, Aliyah Jean Prather of Jasper, Dylan Steve of Jasper, Grayson Steve of Jasper, Lennon Steve of Jasper; nephews, Ridge Prather of Jasper, Micah Prather of Jasper.  Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members also survive.

            Steve was preceded in death by his niece, Mia Prather; uncle, Johnny Rich; grandparents, Arthur Lee and Claudine Prather, Joe and Hazel Rich.

            A memorial service was  held at 2 p.m.; Friday, September 23, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Caylor, Rev. Ronnie Kelly, and Rev. Corey Rich officiating.  

            In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund for Veterans and Suicide Prevention at Community Bank of Pickens County.

Marvin Francis

            Marvin (Mab) Tilmon Francis, 75, of Jasper, Georgia passed away at his home Wednesday, September 21, 2022 after a strong fight against lung cancer. He was an Atlanta native born at Crawford Long Hospital on Peachtree Street.

            Mab was a pioneer in computer banking starting at the First National Bank of Atlanta, Georgia in 1963 and then retiring from the First Bank of Stockbridge, Georgia in 2007.  In the early 70s, he helped develop and implement the Award winning “Tillie the All Time Teller” advertising campaign and the first major ATMs in Atlanta.

            He worked with the independent Bankers of Georgia and Georgia Tech on the first IBM Person Computers to help spread the use of PC’s. Mab and a programmer worked together to develop one of the first Automated Loan Documentation programs for a PC that was used by numerous Auto and Financial companies throughout Georgia for decades.

            He spearheaded the successful application that resulted in the First State Bank of Stockbridge being named the independent Bankers of Georgia “Community Bank of the Year in 2004.

            From 1966 to 1968 he was a Drill Sergeant specializing in Physical Training at Fort Polk, LA “Tigerland” Advance infantry Training. His Company broke the All Army Physical Average score on three occasions. He trained thousands of soldier that went directly to Vietnam.

            Golf was his passion and it was his life time goal to learn the mechanics of the golf swing which he finally accomplished after about 50 years. Mab won several awards including Bent Tree Senior Club Champion three times, back to back two man team Match Play Champions, individual Match Play Champions, individual Match Play Champion and numerous other competitions.

            He enjoyed community involvement and spent over a decade in the Tucker and Rockdale Jaycees. More recently he was a Georgia Mountains Hospice of Jasper volunteer for over a decade.

            He most loved spending time with family.

            He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty of Jasper; his daughter and son-in-law, Abbi and Bryant Odom of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Clint and Kelly Owens of Tualatin, Oregon; son and his partner, Shane and Craig Francis of Guerneville, California; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Bob Cantrell of Tolar, Texas; grandchildren, Charley Odom, Anneka Owens, Charlie Owens, Thea Owens, Skylar Cogswell, and Jaycee Cogswell.

            A veteran’s memorial service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on November 2, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. with long time friend and hospice chaplain, Roland Nelson performing the service.

Tommy Turner

December 14, 1940 – September 24, 2022

            On September 24, 2022, Thomas Luke (Tommy) Turner passed away peacefully. Tommy was born on December 14, 1940 to Thomas and Clara Turner in Tate, Georgia. He obtained a degree in Pharmacy at Mercer University in Atlanta, then began a lifelong career as a much respected local pharmacist in Jasper. Tommy loved his family, the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

            Tommy joins his Heavenly Father to be reunited with his parents and his beloved son Luke. He is survived by his daughters, Terri Turner-Bowen and Tara Turner-Caton, as well as his grandchildren, Bailey, Blair, Corbin, Devin, Dylan, and Cody. He also leaves behind his brother Joe Turner, who resides in Newnan, Georgia.

            Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, September 28th at 11 a.m. at Cagle Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Norman James officiating.

            Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, following the funeral service.

            Pallbearers: Bryon Turner, Todd Turner, Brad Turner, Corbin Bowen, Dylan Caton, and Cody Caton.

Portia Hensley

            Portia “Cricket” Hensley, 79, of  Ball Ground, passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 at her home.  She was born June 11, 1943 to Will and Eary Goforth in Dawsonville, Georgia.

            Cricket is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tracy Hensley of Ball Ground; granddaughter, Heather and Nathan McAllister of Marble Hill.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.          

            Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Keown officiating. Interment will follow in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

            The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Joan Garsell

            Joan D. Garsell, 73, of Ball Ground, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Northside Hospital Forsyth. She was born November 3, 1948 to J.W. (Toad) and Clara Mae Mathews in Jasper.

            Joan is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Delleene and David Worley of Ball Ground, Rosa and Bobby Turner of Cumming, Hannah Holloway; sons, Joseph Holloway, Kory Garsell, Jackson Fazzio; sisters, Carol Mathews of Dawsonville, Wanda Walls of Dawsonville, Dinah Densmore of Ball Ground; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and June Mathews of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Emily Reed, Ashley Foster, Mathew Turner; and two great-grandchildren.  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.          

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerardo Garsell and her parents, J.W. (Toad) and Clara Mae Mathews.

            Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 29, 2022 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Reverend Chris White and Reverend Gary Keown officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.

            The family will receive friends at Roper Funeral Home Wednesday, September 28 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.; and Thursday, September 29 from 9 a.m. until 1 a.m.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory. 

Jacqueline White

            Jacqueline Eloise White, 70, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 24, 2022 at her home. She was born July 29, 1952 to Daniel and Gladys White in Rome, Georgia. 

            Jacqueline is survived by her son, Daniel Benner of Jasper; sister, Sara Fowler of Jasper; sister, Dana Bandy of Mineral Bluff; aunt, Nancy McAfee of Atlanta; and nephew, Scott Fowler of Jasper. She was preceded in death by husband, Gary Wayne Benner. 

            A private memorial service will be held by the family.

            Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Greg Chumley

            Greg Chumley, 60, of Marble Hill died Tuesday, September 20, 2022.  Memorial service, Friday, September 23, 2022, 2 p.m., Bearden Funeral Home Chapel.  Bearden Funeral Home, Dawsonville, GA.
