The Pickens County America 250 Committee held its inaugural meeting on October 6, beginning local preparations for one of the most significant milestones in United States history: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
In attendance were (left to right above) seated County Commission Chair Kris Stancil, Jasper Mayor Kirk Raffield; standing Lions Club member Leslie Miller, former Jasper Mayor Steve Lawrence, and Suzanne Harman, Past Regent of the Sequoyah Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
The America 250 commemoration, officially recognized nationwide, invites all Americans to celebrate the founding of our country, honor its progress, and look forward to the future. The committee is hard at work planning events that will engage the community in this once-in-a-generation celebration.
As part of the kickoff, official America 250 proclamations were signed by both Commissioner Stancil and Mayor Raffield, signaling the county’s commitment to honoring this historic occasion.
“This is more than a date on the calendar,” said Harman. “America 250 gives us an opportunity to reflect on who we are as a people, celebrate our shared values, and pass on the spirit of freedom to the next generation.”
Special events and public programs will be announced in the coming months. Residents, schools, civic groups, and local organizations are encouraged to participate and join the celebration.
