Pickens Vocal Trio wins state championship

Pickens High School’s Girls Trio sang their way into a 1st place win at the recent Georgia High School Association’s AAA State Literary meet.

“These young ladies worked very hard in a short period of time, January to March,” said PHS Chorus Director Justin Davis. “I chose the repertoire, and the Trio did the rest.”

Davis selected “Cantate Domino” (Sing to the Lord) by German Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz, edited by Nancy Grundahl, and “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around,” a Civil Rights freedom song arranged by Rollo Dilworth.

“I am so proud of their work ethic and musicianship,” Davis said. “Congratulations to our state champions. Go Dragons!”

The GHSA Literary meet was held on Saturday, March 21, at Bremen High School, west of Atlanta near the Alabama state line.

PHS competed in Girls’ Solo, Argumentative Essay, Personal Essay, Extemporaneous Speaking, and International Extemporaneous on the regional level. The Girls Trio ensemble competed against 6 other AAA high schools from across the state.

The Girls Trio includes Evie Hendrix, 9th Grade; Sydney Woodward, 12th Grade; and Willow Duncan, 11th Grade.
