CARES is celebrating 25 years of positively impacting lives. Driven by a passion for people and fueled by dedicated volunteers, CARES has provided food, financial assistance and resource counseling for Pickens County families in need – week in and week out – for 1,300 weeks in a row.
Phase 1 of commemorating this amazing milestone in the history of this vital organization happened this past weekend at Lee Newton Park and featured a car show brought to us by Tracy Hensley and the Pickens Freedom Cruisers and sponsored by Kevin Godfrey of Corporate Healthcare Finance, a motorcycle show brought to us Michelle Tidwell of iThink Financial and also sponsored by Kevin Godfrey of Corporate Healthcare Finance, a corn hole tournament sponsored by Kevin O’Dea of Escape and Evade, food venues provided by Bojangles, Les Bons Temps and Lollidrops and live music provided by Robert Meadows and Rusted Soul and sponsored by Steve and Ann Kern and the Rock Star Golfers of Sharp Mountain Preserve.
One of the highlights of this multi-faceted event was CARES’ first ever beauty pageant for chickens brought to us by Ava Rogers of WYYZ “The Croc!” This pageant provided much entertainment, unified a multi-generational crowd and raised over $3700 to help CARES move into the next 25 years of assisting the good people of Pickens County.
In addition to the above-mentioned sponsors, the CARES family would also like to thank John Thornton of Diversified Electronics for his generous sponsorship. Much gratitude goes to Coca-Cola United of Jasper, Pickens Progress, WLJA, Cherie Martin of ETC TV3 and Turner Tire for their generosity, as well.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 12 as CARES will be conducting Phase 2 of our 25th anniversary celebration with a revival of “A Taste of Pickens” to be held at Chattahoochee Tech from 11 until 2.
