The opening Pledge of Allegiance went smoothly at Talking Rock’s town council meeting Thursday. Then things went downhill.
Over the course of two hours with a crowd of 20 or so residents looking on (and joining in) multiple feuds emerged. Fingers were pointed and voices raised with complaints of everything from the small – where outdoor lights shine and mildew in the public bathroom; to the large – sloppy financial record keeping and ungrateful newcomers who don’t appreciate the small town.
It’s fortunate that Mayor Randy Banks’ gavel was made of sturdy wood as he repeatedly banged it yelling for “order.” Rancor showed from the start when the minutes were never approved as charges of inaccurate finances turned that usually mundane municipal business into a contentious debate.
