Used book sale returns

You are invited to join the Friends of Pickens Library for our fall Book Sale from 1 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 6th in the Community Room of the Pickens County Library in Jasper. Members of the FOPL will have access to early admission from 10 a.m. – noon on Saturday, as one of the perks for being a “Friend.” You may join the FOPL online prior to the sale or at the door on sale day.

Traditions, customs or beliefs passed on from generation to generation, are abundant in America – maybe more prevalent in smaller communities like ours. Among the most recognizable traditions are Christmas, Thanksgiving,

Fourth of July parades, Friday night high school football, the Marble Festival and the Friends of Pickens Library annual Used Book Sale. For many years the weekend after Labor Day meant the annual Used Book Sale would be in full swing at the Appalachian Campus of our local Technical School.

Many Pickens’ residents blocked off that weekend on their calendars to attend this event, which for some became a family tradition. Thousands of books were gathered, sorted and offered for sale to hundreds of Pickens County citizens, all to benefit our local library.

When our new library opened, we were offered a more convenient way to provide affordable books on a regular basis to our loyal supporters and book lovers, in lieu of the once-a-year massive sale.

The Pickens County Library now has allocated permanent sales shelves, which are maintained by the Friends of Pickens Library. These books are available to the public for purchase whenever the library is open.

This year we are bringing back the FOPL Used Book Sale on the Saturday following Labor Day as traditionally observed, but it will be called our fall Book Sale. Thanks to generous donations from many of you, we have an abundance of books in multiple genres for every age group. For your purchasing convenience, we will accept cash, checks or credit cards.

School is in session, summer is winding down, and fall is quickly approaching. Now is the perfect time to begin preparing for the winter season with an abundance of great reading material for the entire family.

Hope to see you at our library on September 6th for our fall sale. Please visit our website at friendsofpickenslibrary.org and our Facebook page for additional up-to-date information regarding membership,

donations, events and sales.
