Cash prizes for fiction, non-fiction & poetry
Submitted by William Young, Sassafras Literary Vice President
For those of you in high school or middle school, there is a contest underway, and any student living in and educated in Pickens County is eligible. It is a writing challenge in three categories: fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
This opportunity should be almost irresistible to any ambitious student, as 1st place in each category for high school is $75; 2nd place, $50; and 3rd place, $25. In middle school, 1st place wins $60, 2nd place, $40, and 3rd place, $20 in each category.
Those in home school or alternate programs are urged to enter, as well as those in the public system.
There’s a 1500-word limit in fiction and non-fiction and a 50-line limit on poetry. Help and support through artificial intelligence is unacceptable.
Entries may be submitted to the student’s language arts teacher or can be entered online. Go to www.sassafrasliterary.org/contest/ where you will find more information, an entry form for hard copy entries, and an online entry form.
With sponsorship through the Community Bank of Pickens County, this contest is brought to you by Sassafras Literary. The one goal of Sassafras Literary is to inspire and empower creative writing in the adults and youth of Pickens County.
An awards ceremony will be held November 6, 2025.
